I’d look at your GFCI plugs in the bathroom to make sure you don’t need to reset it

Lowes didn't have a GE 1 Pole 20 Amp breaker so I got what looks to be the same except it is an ABB 1 Pole 20 Amp. I'll make sure they are compatible before I trust it.

The shame of all this is that my father was an electrician and I never paid attention to any of it when I was growing up. If I had paid attention when he or my uncle needed my help I would know electricity, auto repair, welding, etc. I did learn how to cut cows, clean deer, and have a hog killing from start to finish on the coldest days of Winter though. If we ever go back to days of living off the grid at least I will fare better than most.

Maybe. Or, you could have crossed a wire incorrectly and it's causing the breaker to trip and do it's job. I've made that mistake before. Can you pull the switch and take a few photos for us?

One way to troubleshoot it is removing the switch from the circuit, reset the breaker and see if everything comes back online. If it does, that isolates the issue to the switch or your wiring. That's where I'd start.

I don't think it matters with a switch. I also don't think the terminals are different colors, because it doesn't matter. Unless it's a 3/4 way switch. But even then you can't go by wire colors on residential wiring.

ABB bought out GE, so the ABB are the GE equivalent. I would call the man.

Dang, I know what those plugs are for and never thought of that last night. I'll give it a shot before moving on to the next step which is to replace the breaker. Wish me luck guys. This is virgin territory for me.

I would be surprised if the light switch was part of a GFI circuit. Even if it was, I would think they would wire the switch to the line side and not the load side??

For FYI, unless it's a smart switch then there is no neutral wired to the switch. Neutrals are typically wired together with a wire nut and shoved in the back of the box.

A standard switch is just a break in the hot wire (blk). Open, light off, close light on.

While this is true at times I have seen bathroom circuits include plugs with GFCI and lights on the same circuit

Replaced the breaker with no problems but that didn't solve the issue. That's all I can do so it will be up to the man on Monday. I'm frustrated.

I would remove the new switch and see if other things come back on. As said before, a tester would help.

Is the light switch a single or double pole? You may have it wired to same side of switch.

It’s seldom the breaker. That’s generally what Handy Andy’s diagnose the cause of the problem though.

maybe the switch didn't go bad and it's a wire nut in your ceiling box, or you broke a wire wiring up the switch.

I'm guessing a neutral got connected somewhere it shouldn't.

Maybe pull the switch out of the box and take a few pictures to post how it is currently wired. Then remove wires from switch, put breaker back on and see if anything starts working.

My guess is that you have the wrong switch or the new switch is broken.

These other lights you're talking about, are they in the that room and on that same switch? or are they located other places and have their own switches?

Flip breaker off. Take switch out and unwire it. Separate the wires. Flip breaker back on. Take a pair of pliers and grab one of the blk wires and touch the other blk wire. Lights should work. If not, you got something else going on.

Residential wiring is kinda tricky. A white wire isn't always a neutral. It can be a switch leg or constant hot . Just depends on how it was wired.

What you need to determine. Does the constant hot. Go to the switch box or the light box. That's usually where I start, then try to figure the rest out. While I had the wires pulled out of the boxes. I'd pull wire nuts off and look at the connections.

I hate residential wiring. It's the most difficult to diagnose. You never know who's worked on it and what they've done.
