I saw a story about a crypto mining center. The noise was crazy They do make believe mining, for make believe money, and it uses real power? Yup. Its going to be one of those things that folks look back on and say "Why did we do that"? Because the puppet masters got filthy rich doing it. Ok, filthier richer.

I remember years ago in meetings we would have at the power company, we were concerned to see power consumption dropping, because manufacturing was moving from the United States and appliances, light bulbs, etc... were all getting more and more efficient. At that time, electric cars were just getting started, so we were hopeful that the widespread adoption of those would balance out the demand.
Fast forward to now and I don't think lack of consumer power consumption is an issue for the power company anymore. As late as 2016, our executives were predicting that power consumption would basically be a flat scale for the next 20 years. Boy were they wrong.

A former member texted asking what in the Sam Hill was going on at the Colbert steam plant. Sounded like jet engines revving up for take off. Couldn’t hardly stand it trying to turkey hunt down from there.
I guess that’s part of their power production
These data centers required green energy being a certain percentage of their usage. Than Google and facebook for all the solar farms around these parts. Oh yea the taxpayers paid for it to. Companies worth theta kinda money getting incentive packages and demoing certain things to be a part of the process

They are protesting them right along with more conservative minded folks who dont like the new power big utility bills and the water and property issues that come with them. You implying that a typical residential power bill will increase to pay for these, in Alabama at least?

We do a TON of work at Data centers. People are so against them but would be shocked to know just how many already exist in towns they live in that are just disguised as regular buildings or where they have repurposed buildings to hold data centers. The large ones though, like Google, Amazon, or Meta are kind of hard to hide. Meta is putting a massive one just south of Montgomery directly across from the Hyundai plant. There is/was talks of a 4500acre solar field towards Mobile to help offset consumption Yeah we’ve done some work there so far and should be there for about the next 4-5 years.

I understand there is other construction going on on site , (the old Widows Creek Steam Plant site). Possible expansion of the data center and other related support facilities . Lots of activity out there.

Data centers don't seem to be very eco friendly. Wonder why there's no outcry from the libtards. Saw a story out of Michigan where noise from a DC in a nearby neighborhood was so annoying people were wanting to leave but couldn't sell, property values killed. They haven't been paid to protest ---- The ones with the money need those data centers!!!!!

I spent several years in a Google Data Center. Other than walking through the chiller plant while there were 10 2500 ton chillers, or hearing the obnoxious hum while on a server floor, they are pretty quiet. You won’t hear any of that from a neighborhood miles away. I’d doubt neighbors are hearing too much of anything really. Maybe I was just used to the noise. It would get eerily quiet while on night shift in that big ole place.
A lot of people in the area may not even know it exists, at least to the scale that it is.
While I was there Google had started implementing liquid cooled servers. That could lessen the needed space if they want it to as they were way more efficient.. but what it does is just mean you can do 100x production in the same size space. Which means you make more money. Which means you build more building to make more money. They are here to stay and ain’t getting smaller, just more efficient and more of em.
I used to get recruited like crazy to these “small” data centers. They are everywhere too, not near the scale obviously.

This is interesting. Festus, Mo voted out their entire city council because of a data center. Back in the early 2000s I had to photograph some of Verizon’s call centers. They’re on suspended floors that had cold air flowing thruout the subfloor and funneling up thru the servers. Keeping things cool for optimized performance. These were around the loop and each center could handle only 18k callers at any given time. I can only imagine the processing power necessary and the cooling ability. Much less these huge data centers being built and the power drain needed.
