A few pissed parents. My neighbors 9-10 year old son is on a tournament/travel team. The kids a pitcher and great glove in the middle infield he knows the game. Gona put the ball in play from the plate. Games tomorrow 8 and 11. Well season open tomorrow and he’s hunting….. The coach is letting him come in and start the 11:00 game as a pitcher. Per a few major league parents this is a bad taste in their mouth. There’s only one opening day each year many more baseball game to play. I’m not helping much I did show gobbling sound videos to them. I left at 6:35 they were on the limb. Baseball or Turkeys the kids 10.

If he is on a team his commitment to the team should come first imo.

Many more seasons of turkeys. If he committed to the team he should be there.

As an aside, it's a complete joke that Alabama's turkey season starts so late. That's what I'd be mad about.

Nothing wrong with the kid missing a game to go hunting.

It’s fine if he goes turkey hunting and misses the first game. I’m not sure it’s fine to start him over another kid who IS going to get up and make the first game, has a shot to pitch the 11 game, but the kid who went turkey hunting and missed the first game gets the nod.
That’s where the conflict may come into play.

The kid ain’t taking himself hunting. The dad should have been told that if he missed the 8 o’clock game for that reason, don’t bother coming to the 11 o’clock game. I’d bench him. Or put him in right field. Maybe dad will think twice next time. Of course dad is gonna raise hell if that happens and the kid gets to continue being entitled. I’m sure some other dad’s would like to be in the woods tomorrow but they are gonna be at the game

He's 10, not pitching for the Braves. Guarantee that every kid on the team will miss at least one game before the season ends, for something not nearly the foundational experience of hunting with their dad.

My son also plays on a 10u travel ball team. Multiple kids on the team turkey and deer hunt. The other coaches and I discuss juvenile and regular opening days and plan our tournaments around them.
I learned my lesson last year on letting my son hunt in the morning before a tournament. We typically play one day tournaments on Saturdays. On this particular weekend I had already told him we would go hunt the velvet deer hunt on Sunday morning after the Saturday tournament. Well as it worked out rain delays forced us to come back and play on Sunday. Luckily our first game wasn't until 11 or 12 on Sunday. We went hunting and he killed a really nice velvet 10. We then go to the tournament.... He was obviously tired and wore out. He didn't play near as well as what he is capable of. That will be the first and last time we do that.

Piss on baseball.
None of those kids are going to the big show.

Maybe he is the best option to start game 2 ? You gonna start #3 to prove a point ? Pool or elimination games ? Does pool affect seeding ? I’m sure the coach wants to put his team in the best position going into bracket play.

As a baseball devotee and serious umpire guy put that kid in the woods and let him see Tom. Being a slayer of all of two turkeys in my life ball will be there for him but the turkey woods? That's special to see what He has made for us.

I wouldnt piss on ever ball bouncin game they is compared to a deer or turkey..boys wer hes supposed to be..in the woods..ill never waste me or my youngins time on that crap..i like baseball..an i like playin checkers..mean about the same to me. Hate me..delete me..i give no chits

I'd sit him if he missed the first game and showed up for the second if I were coach. There's commitment and there's convenience and the parent should be the one teaching commitment

It’s not about baseball vs turkeys. It’s about teaching your kid that commitment means something. That his word means something. Learning to be disciplined will take him far in life. I read in a book the other day that our core beliefs are pretty much hammered out by the time we are 12-14 years old. Up to that point, you are helping create a lense that that kid will look through and affect every decision he makes.

My dad sat me and my brother down at about that age and said it’s either hunting/fishing or ball he was happy either way. We both choose hunting.

I was leaning towards the turkey hunting side till I read this. I've been swayed, I lean towards commitment and keeping your word.

Take him hunting after the games, I did that with my son. Play 2 morning games and be in the woods by 2 or 3, he liked it better anyway because he wasn’t waking up at 4. Killed a lot of turkey on evening hunts. Thats my plan today if the wind ain’t at mock 7 this afternoon

Best of both worlds, watch’’em play then go watch them shoot something.

I think this mentality is a lot of the problem with kids sports. The kid is 10 years old, baseball isn't meant to be a 'commitment', it's meant to be fun (a 'sport' if you will). Parents have made it a 'career', it isn't, and that has taken a lot of the fun out of it for kids. A kid in elementary nor middle school should have to be married to a sport just to be able to play. Practicing 5 days a week and having games every weekend and being unable to miss a practice or game without being punished is asinine.

So is this baseball for the parents or the kids.
Appears parents living vicariously through their kids is what matters.

Little league wasn’t this serious when I was kid. Of course we didn’t have travel ball and million dollar sports complexes to play in as kids
