I used to walk a set of tracks in SC , and always marveled at how Deer can somehow manage to get hit and killed.

I think it’s the same when you smoke one with your vehicle. Add in the fact a train can slow down or ease over.

Apparently we should just patent “train” cover scent. These dang deer with their super senses, train smell must just really drive them wild.

In an automobile, and 33 years of driving I have hit 1 deer. In 22 years of train service, probably somewhere 80-100. Last week I hit 3 does at one time. I don’t get it. Dogs are the worst. They get in between the gauge and run away. Then you plow them down.

Before you ask here are the other things I have hit:

Countless hogs, coons, opossum
Probably 15-20 dogs
Several cats
1 horse
4 owls
1 blue Herron.
3 turkey
2 beavers
6 car/truck/suv’s (2 had human fatalities)
1 18 wheeler
2 humans (suicides)

I couldn’t even count how many near misses I have had.

That’s wild! Thanks for the info fr8. Biggest mess I’ve seen like we talking was a horse who got hit right in the city limits of Clio. A girl’s mare got out and a car took out the horse’s front legs and the horse was trying to run around all top heavy looking on 2 broken front legs. Clio cop at the time tried to put the horse down with a 9mm, went through a couple mags, line of cars watching it all go down. Quite the spectacle

Why would deer act like Indians?

Should we season our corn with Tikka Masala?

Thats some crazy stuff. I saw a train hit a full grown bull on the tracks when I was a kid. We played on them all the time. Lucky we didn’t get killed. Had a real close call and it cured me from doing real stupid shit on them. I saw a buddies dog get run down by one, the whole train ran over his ass and he LIVED!!! Buddy scooped him up and ran home and the SOB went to the vet and survived. He was never the same after that though, he would try to tear you a new one if you looked at him wrong. They had to keep him locked up in the backyard after that probably had traumatic brain injury 😭😭😭😭

Not just corn but salted corn, now that's a real attractant . Why would bulk corn in a grain car be salted ?

"Why do you ask"?

Too many people spend money they don't have , on things they don't need, to impress people they don't know.

The “hole in the horn” buck was a train fatality apparently.

We had a foreign exchange student back in high school who is from Sweden. He is now a conductor over there. The last time I saw him he was telling me about how much of a mess a reindeer will make. He says they hit them all the time.

A train spilled corn one time on the NS line where it crosses 219 in Selma. You could look down that track and see 50 deer as far as the eye could see.
