I guess this is a quarterly or semi-annual thread. We had one long term employee move away last week. No-show, no-call, no notice. He and his wife couldn't find any one to keep their kids, so they move back to her home town. We had two more lined up to come in this morning. Neither called or showed. I don't understand.

I could go on and on about it. Trying to keep employees is the most aggravating thing in the business world.

No-show, no-call, no notice = low class individual IMO. These are the type folks that don’t return a buggy to a cart corral
The left lane is for the the purpose of moving the flow of traffic forward regardless of the speed limit. If your impeding the flow of traffic get your ass in the right lane. It's really that simple...

He and his wife couldn't find any one to keep their kids, so they move back to her home town. We had two more lined up to come in this morning. Neither called or showed. I don't understand. The two lined up to come in, that neither called on showed, is the latest trick to continue to draw on unemployment while sitting on the couch or porch instead of working. Apply and get an interview. Dont show up for the interview and report to the department of labor, that you interviewed but didnt get the job and stay on unemployment as long as possible. Best part is that there is no way for employers to report the people that are doing this to ADL. Wife will set up 5-7 interviews and she's lucky if 2 actually show up. She's tried to report them and when she finally did get someone on the phone, was told that the system has no way to track the individuals doing it and no way to follow up on it. Just another way to game a system that is intentionally set up, so that it is possible to play games. "In Alabama, individuals on unemployment benefits are required to actively seek work and report their job search activities to the Alabama Department of Labor. This requirement is part of the ongoing eligibility criteria for unemployment benefits. If you are not actively seeking work, you may be required to report this to the Department of Labor, and your benefits could be affected. It is important to keep records of your job search activities and provide the necessary information to the Department of Labor to maintain your eligibility for unemployment benefits."

In our worst year, I went through 21 to keep three. For us, it had settled in the last few years. We're a small shop. We don't have the luxury of overstaffing to compensate for a lot of absenteeism. We had the one quit. Another got caught DUI and is off paying his debt to society for the next few weeks. We need some help. I had one come to the office and ask for a raise. I asked him if a 28% raise would work. He was all fired up about that. So I told him to be at work all the time he was scheduled and his pay would increase 28%. His mood changed again. Unfortunately, you can't fire someone like that because the next guy in line is usually worse. I could go on and on about it. Trying to keep employees is the most aggravating thing in the business world. People will complain about the robots taking all the jobs. Since 2018, we've gone from one robot to nine.

Now you are thinking about adding number 10 and 11.

In my entire life I never had a job that payed m more than 15 bucks an hour......and I was a skilled card holding toolmaker. What I wouldn't give to be working again for that kind of money.

General labor in a foundry. Well, there’s your problem. Hot and hard work.

HVAC business is hard to find any one with experience. The bigger companies usually get them because they can pay more and can offer insurance. I can not offer insurance anymore because a family plan with vision and dental cost me $2k/month for one employee.

Yep, either they pull a no show once an interview is set up, or they are hired on & never show for the first day/disappear within 3 days. I had one show up for the interview, receive the job, show up for onboarding paperwork at 6:30am the next morning, take his handbook and safety gear & head to the project site. Foreman called me a few hours later & the guy never showed, just went home. Same guy calls every time I run an add on Indeed, has done it so many times he can't even remember which companies he screwed with.
