What would you guys consider good spacing for food plot locations? 400yds from one to another? 600yds?

I’d think it matters more how much area you have in plots, relative to the total property, the surrounding landscape, and what you are going to have planted. Generally, about 1-5% of acreage in plots is pretty reasonable. We’ve generally only been allowed about 1%, one acre plot per hundred acres, by property owners on timberland leases. I wouldn’t want too many plots side by side by side but I’d also rather have more 1/2 to 1.5ac plots spread over the average property than I would the same acreage in 5+ acre plots.

Depending on shape, location, etc. but I have found this to be a decent rule of thumb.

The size of the food plots…..the amount of bedding cover……the deer density……
Ideally on a large property you want to have something like 40% of the acreage be in open fields full of high quality forage with maybe another 40% in bedding cover…….A lot of places have way more cover than they have food so the bedding area gets filled with as many deer as what can exploit the food sources……You really want to flip that around to where the bedding becomes the limited resource and the food is in excess….. or wherever it comes close to balancing

MoeBuck, I think the first question is are you trying to grow deer or just kill deer in season?

Our orchard is on a 10 acre piece of property. We have two food plots on it. Both get used. One is a little secluded, in a funnel. Quite a few bucks will come through there in the daylight. The other is between the orchard and a pretty dense thicket. It gets the most doe action. Ive seen 12 does on it plenty of evenings.. Theyre both just about 1/4 acre. Both have feed and water and quick escape. I can see them. Both well out of our shooting house.

Depends ........ on terrain and topography , your property may not allow you to do what you want. In mountains and hills you often can't put plots or fields where you want them . I'd like to have about 2 acres on each 40 , but I can't do it, terra won't allow it.

A significant portion of my place has too much slope so I stack plots in where I can without so much regard to spacing.
