I've got 90 acres here at the house I bought in 2007. It was just thicket and scrub oaks with a creek running through it. It had been cut 9 years prior. It was hard hunting back then, the oaks didnt even make acorns yet. All you could do was cut an opening or shooting lane to hunt. There wasnt very many deer on my place.
What I did is create diffent habitats openings , doing some burning, discing, thinning and absolutely no bush hogging. The no bushogogging has probably been the best thing I've done by far. All it does is get rid of food and promote grasses.
I have no greenfields or corn piles, just what is here. The closest green fields are at least half a mile.
I've seen 13 deer the last two afternoon hunts. Rattled one in, Have seen two chasing does. One was a shooter, but I wasn't fast enough. I didn't see that many deer the first 2 seasons we had the place. I saw 5 today overlooking about an acre I burned last week. I'm pretty pleased
I hope whoever get this land after me takes care of it and doesn't screw it up. Anyway I've been blessed with it for a short while.

It is very satisfying to have a place of your own that you are able to manage to your own goals with your own hands and directions. And there is no better feeling than that you get at the end of a successful hunt/season when you know your hard work led to it all. Congratulations and continued success to you.

Ive never rattled one in before. But it was right up there with calling a turkey in. After 45 minutes he came in. I heard the grunts and bushes shaking efore he came out. Pretty neat.

Congratulations on your efforts paying off! It IS a great feeling of having a place that's actually yours that has deer on it. I have just 13 acres but so far this season it has produced 1 doe, one 10 point and one big 4 point. All 3 were the first deer ever for the hunters. Lots of deer on camera besides those 3. I don't even hunt the place but let youngsters and women take their first deer on it. It's been working that way for about 10 years now.

I enjoy the work more than the hunting and really wish that I had been keeping a journal of all my ventures. I’m 4 years into my most recent project and it’s shaping up nicely. Just hope I live long enough to see those Longleaf grow into poles. They are 2 years old and I just recently finished burning them for the first time. Gonna do a site prep burn on another tract this weekend to get it ready for its second rotation of pines. I had planned on holding it a few more years, but pine decline and the pole market changed my plans. It was kinda bittersweet to be out there marking poles in a stand that I helped my granddaddy plant when I was just a kid. He sold his cows and planted pines back in 1994 using a pull behind planter from the forestry commission. They “let” me ride the planter on most of it. After a couple days, I was pretty good at it. My payment for all my hard work was a brand new pair of 12” LL Bean hunting boots because that’s exactly what I wanted. I first thinned it in September 2009, did a marked second thinning in October 2016 and clearcut it in November 2025. I had also burned it a half dozen times during the rotation. That ol creek bottom grew a mighty fine stand of timber and produced a return that even 2Dogs would give a tip of the hat.

My thing is I got to be close to the house so I shoot them with a 45/70 not to far to tote and dont want to trail

Most of ours is in timber, but I have a couple places that’s gonna be wildlife only too hopefully.
