"Why do you ask"?

Too many people spend money they don't have , on things they don't need, to impress people they don't know.

You should have to show an ID to vote period.

on the surface, it seems ridiculous that anyone claiming to be a conservative would oppose it................but I would like to know what completely unrelated bullcrap they tried to sneak into the fine print that could potentially explain conservatives' opposition.

That's often their MO.....try to sneek in stuff that otherwise would never pass and have it piggyback the main thing. Maybe that isn't the case here, but it wouldn't shock me

the 10-second version is it would require proof of citizenship documentation in order to register to vote.

The opposition's points in the link above are that it "restricts voting rights" by causing undue hardship by requiring people to come up with said documentation....such as

-military members that move frequently and have to reregister
-women, because when they get married and change their name, they have to get new documentation after a name change
-old/poor people who are somehow less likely to have things like a birth certificate (not sure why they think old/poor people automatically lose their birth cert)
-victims of natural disasters - because their documentation may have been lost/destroyed

All of the above is complete and total BS. You have to have the various required documents to do any host of other normal, day-to-day things

IMHO, Voting is an important enough civic duty that people SHOULD have to jump through hoops to have that opportunity. I don't know where the line should be drawn but something more restrictive than just being a bonafide citizen is needed these days. Property owner, IQ test, military service, understanding of the Bill of Rights........ a combination of some of those and/or other equally applicable standards. Rampant voting for Santa Clause and dead people voting has already gone too far.

Get the F out of the BATFE. The F is guaranteed by the US Constitution. Those other letters are not.

I’m with you on this, make the bar low, but a citizen should have to put forth some effort to maintain voter registration. Perhaps a re-registration every 4 years with verification of your residence and proof that you pay bills for said residence. Nothing too crazy but something that would carry a penalty for falsifying that record. Having a national data base that would automatically flag a person if they registered in multiple states. They already track folks on gun purchases (they definitely track this even if they say they do not), drivers licenses, and all of our online activity. It’s not a big ask for the feds to ensure that one person is registered in only one state. Pretty sure the blue states would fight this tooth and nail, but if it can’t be enacted now, it’s only because the folks in office don’t want secure elections.
