Any recommendations for a good deer hunt in Texas? I want to take my 10yr old son on a hunt. I don’t want to break the bank but also not stay in a rat hole. I’d like for him to maybe take a good management/cull deer and myself something around 140-150ish.

I’ve never been but always hear good things about Cactus Jack and King Ranch. Probably pay around $5,000 for a 145-150, but success rate is very high.

My brother is guiding hunts at a ranch in Texas. You have probably seen some of the pictures I post but it’s a jam up place.

I am following this as well, I would like for my son and I to go sometime, but if I am gonna spend the money I want to do it right. That Cactus Jacks looks nice. Cactus Jack used to have a waiting list, about as long as the travel distance on I10 between the FL and AL line. Pretty sure that CJ still has a base fee on mgmt bucks up to 135" of like $3,000, then it's a couple hundred bucks per inch over that base, up to 145". A 150" will be around $5500 and it'll be $300/inch more, for every inch over 150 til you get to 160. Then at 160 it jumps to a new base and increases either $400 or $500/inch from there. I've been on it, not hunting, and it is probably the best free range ranch and hunt in TX. If you're gun hunting, it's as close to a 100% success rate as you'll find. You'll see more and bigger bucks than you dreamed were possible to grow. Figure you shooting a 150 and your son a 135, you're probably looking at around $10K for the total trip once you tip the guides. If you're interested, I go ahead and call them and get on the list. Unless things have changed, it'll probably be several years before you get called.

Had a friend who had to write a BIG check after he shot a nice buck in South Texas.

Considering the years most people put into deer leases to get a single 130 around here, $10K for a 150 and a 135 ain't bad at all, if you can easily afford it.

We hunted Mill Iron Ranch in North Texas years ago. Had a blast. And we stayed in a nice double wide trailer, that was very comfortable.
Life is a journey. Make sure and bring plenty of Beer.
My luck has been so bad lately, it could be raining pussies and I'd catch one with a dick broke off in it.

Lots of quality ranches in Texas, low and high fence.
I personally think some folks make way to big a deal about not hunting high fence, especially when there are 4000+ acres inside the fence. We never hunted one smaller than 2 sections (1280 acres), but have hunted several over 3000 acres, with the largest being over 10,000 acres. Our favorite was about 4500 acres inside the fence.

Just because it's high fence doesn't mean that fences are in good enough shape to hold anything. Some I've seen were fence in name only.

One of the most reasonable low fence (free range) pay hunts in south TX I’m aware of is at the King Ranch.
