For those with elderly parents, that may have already been through taking care of them, do yall know of an alert necklace they can wear that would call me if needed? I know they make them that can call the EMS but I’m more interested in one that will call me. My nearly 81 year old mother, decided today that she needed to sit down in the floor to mess with her potted plants. Then when she got ready to get up, she couldn’t. Luckily, I was in town, and was already on my way back home (she lives with us). So she called me and sat there for another 20 minutes until I got there and could pick her up. I told her it’s a good thing she had her phone close to her

Not to derail, but an aside: Friends of ours in Florence. They are both in their 80's. He has bad knees and a bad back, needing help getting around. She was somewhat healthy for he age, but struggled to manhandle him. He's a good size fellow. They have 3 kids, scattered around the southeast. The kids each had a time they called daily. One day recently, they could get no answer. The child that lives nearby went to check on them. She entered through the garage and could hear him yelling for help. She found them at the bottom if the basement stairs.

They were trying to go downstairs and, for whatever reason, she was below him. He fell, taking her down the steps. The fall broke her neck, killing her instantly. It also broke his back. He laid on top of her for several hours, unable to get up. He was unable to attend her funeral. I hunt in some remote places by myself, but I carry a Garmin satellite unit with an SOS feature. That evening, I started the same search you are now doing for my parents.

The one I have calls them first and if they don’t answer they call me. If I don’t answer they call EMS. Works really well believe it’s life alert.

I am 78 and my kids and grandkids call me for help. They do track me on my iPhone and i carry an apple watch in my pocket if needed.

If we're blessed to live long enough, we may all have this season to live through.

I had an aunt (unmarried, no children), who in her late 70s, developed dementia. My mom would stay with her for a week at a time after dementia was undeniable. On more than one occasion, she ended up removing the "in floor" heater grate, remember those? She would somehow crawl into the floor heater and couldn't get out. I don't remember the details but when Mom showed up, she would call the great folks at EMS and they would come and rescue and remove auntie from the floor heater which, fortunately, was not during the winter. But EMS told Mom that after about 3 calls, they had to report to DHR as she wasn't able to stay by herself (this was prior to my mom caring for her). Of course, things quickly diminished with her. Her condition was such that a senior alerting device would not have been beneficial. I commend you for thinking of the safety of your family!

Went through all the mess with my grandfather. Found the easiest thing to do was give him a cell with me on speed dial. Alert MIGHT be able to contact you before emergency, but they're really setup for notifying 911.

Maybe it's a regional thing, but I retired as a Fire Medic and not once every did those words leave mine or any other medics mouth in my presence. Hell, the city I worked at would send medics to administer location on an obese dudes junk because he couldn't reach it. Repeatedly. I can only ever remember two times the admin stopped calls from residence. One was a lift assist at 2am after he'd been out drinking all night. The other was an alcoholic that was abusive to the medics who responded. Pick her old drunk ass up, put her in the bed. She'd call you back before you got back to the station and then cuss you when you came back.

Took them at least 3 years of that, 3+ times a week to finally shut her down. Never heard of calling DHS after 3 falls.

I have called DHS when conditions in the home were unhealthy or family were abusing seniors. I did that a few times.

I bought one years ago from smarthome i believe. You had to program the number it called. It would keep calling until it was answered. Then it played a message. If the pendant wearer was close enough they could talk into the pendant. No fees but it also wasnt monitored. Cost around 100.00.
