I have a Benjamin nitro piston 22 cal. Reading about it says around 1100 fps down to 900. What do you think the effect would be on a beaver head or even chest. what pellets would you use that would mushroom the most or be the most lethal?

Doubt it would do much on the chest, a precise head shot maybe.

It will bury a pellet in a 4 by 4 pretty deep. The velocity is comparable to a 9mm.

If you shoot a beaver in the ribs with a 22cal pellet traveling 900fps..you may not find him..but you probably wont ever see him again either..a 22cal pellet goin 500fps..will absolutely mirk critters i mean..at 800-900fps..your almost as fast as a 22short..an a 22 short will murder stuff..for what ever reason..the 22cal projectile penetrates very good

Are they better pellets than just the regular lead ones?

Try the JSB pellets. I have had a hard time getting a .22 air rifle to zero in and keep real close pattern.
Just try some different pellets.

Yessir I am headed to Walmart to buy me the most powerful flash light they have to mount on the cross bow and it and look at pellets. I got a terrible beaver war to wage. No shotgun allowed

Trapping works well and you don't have to hang around.

That is going to be louder than subsonic 22.

If going for head shots you don't want mushrooming. You need all the available penetration you can get. Heavy, round nose pellet. As beer belly said a 22 subsonic is immensely more powerful than a 22 pellet. About the same speed but 3 times(ish) the projectile wieght.

You are correct I killed over a 100 beavers last year. But sometimes you got to work around people and their dogs and play by the rules of the people who are paying you lol

I thought you were a trapper but the question threw me!!
I would consider a silenced .22, if you want super stealth then a silenced subsonic .22 should work.

This is at goose pond marina in scottsboro. They are scared to death about a dog getting in a trap. I watched some last night come and go through some gaps in the floating docks so maybe I can trap there. Picture rich folks walking their little dogs every where. Actually most people stop and talk to me pretty nice

Sounds like a no win scenario as far as eliminating the problem beavers. Only thought I could offer would be to set traps after dark and trigger at daylight. Also post signs that trapping will be done during those hours. Best of luck working through this challenge!

I have killed 13 so far with my crossbow. Everybody has been told what I am doing and only one-woman kind of frowned and said poor beavers. I said you eat meat don't you? She said yes but I could not stand to watch them kill it. Well anyway last night one of the other ladies seen me and said she had seen 4 at the gas dock bay yesterday morning. I eased down to that dock last night. Hear comes one swimming out. I light him up with my new 4000 lumen coast light and he starts swimming away. I hit him going away and the arrow was hanging half way out and he goes into a death roll like an alligator. I run over to the edge of the dock and kneel down and grab this 40-pound rascal by the foot. Then I finally get ahold of his tail with my other hand. He is twisting and throwing water and we are in mortal combat. I get his tail up and put my knee on it on the dock. then I pull the arrow out and put the broadhead in the hole and jab it plum to his throat. I look up and the lady that frowned about me is standing on the bank with her dog watching lol. I go ahead and get my crossbow cranked and here comes another one. I shoot him and he comes up out of the water and starts going around and around with the arrow hanging out of him. I glance back at her on the bank and she takes off. I text the boss and tell him what happened and he says he will handle the complaints keep killing them. I could here some making that grinding sound they make under me. I lean over and look under the dock and there were 2 more up on top of the Styrofoam. They had chewed a big hole all the way through it and were in the space between the cement and the Styrofoam. They have to breathe air so that gives me an ideal. I am going down there in one of my kayaks and slowly paddle around every dock and try to head shoot them with the pellet gun. What do you think of that plan lol

They have caster mounds everywhere around the bank and under every dock. I am used to working around timber where you see white sticks everywhere where they have been feeding. When i first looked at this job I did not think there could possibly be many because of the food supply. I googled did they eat milfoil and eel grass but did not see a whole lot of information that they did but they have to. I did see one eating eel grass last night though
