Okay, I’m NOT the best in the world at identifying tree varieties. I’m okay when they have leaves on them but struggle some when they are all off. Does anyone have an app the recommend? I’ve seen some that you can take pics of the bark and it will supposedly identify it but I’m not paying for something without k owing how well it works to begin with. I tried using Google Images. The first tree I tried it out on worked great and identified the tree as a Post Oak (I’ve heard them called Iron Oaks too). There was another one right next to it so I took a pic and it called it an Ash. I knew it wasn’t an ash so I moved around the tree thinking the light was affecting it. It then identified it as a Tulip Tree. Ha! I lost my confidence in Google Images at that point.

i would suggest: Picture This I have a subscription for Picture This. I'd say from my experience it is roughly 70% accurate

I use Google lens. Its pretty good. You really cant identify trees well just using bark. Leaves are good, flowers and fruit are even better.

I just went back out and tried it again. Apparently the Hight on the tree makes a difference too. It worked pretty well on the sunny side of the tree. I tried four more trees and it got all of them right.

I haven’t used any of the apps but I have paid some attention in a few native plant identification/gardening groups that I follow and have noticed that at least most of them have uselessly low accuracy. I’m new school enough to use the internet but old school enough to do something that resembles basic research. There are sites, easily found, that will tell you all of the known species of the multitude of trees and shrubs native to most areas. If you can identify and oak as an oak you can use available clues such as bark, leaves, acorns AND caps, even growing location and site condition to narrow it down. Also, look up a description of leaf shapes. Those terms can really help differentiate between species which appear the same to the casual observer.

use copilot or any ai program. I used it and it gave a false id of cickweed but then I looked in the background and there was some chickweed
