I'm wanting to take my son on a quail hunt after Christmas. Any recommendations for a guide/operation? Not looking for anything fancy or overnight accommodations, just an opportunity for us to get out to chase some birds and watch dogs work.

I hear Sellwood Farms is nice.

May want to try Ken Lay (205-530-4175). He has a small operation in south Walker County. He has raised and trained bird dogs for years.

Close to Birmingham, Selwood is probably your best bet. You have to have a membership to hunt quail at Purcell.

This got me to looking since I have never really been on a quail hunt. Call me cheap but after looking at the crazy pricing I don't think I ever will...

You can still find guys around that have dogs and will put out pen raised quail on their property and charge a smaller fee. Some are good and some have weak birds that can't really fly. Its a gamble unless you know someone that had a good experience with one.

Cameron quail preserve in aliceville use to be great. Guess they are still open been there for years. They use to have an option of riding in a mule driven wagon old school.

Thanks again for all of the recs. Found a place called Piney Creek outside of Athens that we're going to try out. I'll report back on how it goes. If anyone else is looking, a few other places I found that were reasonably priced were Chukar Ranch near Cullman (though their website is down/infected), and Crimson Acres in Dadeville which looks like they are just getting started up.

I grew up chasing wild birds on my grandparent's farm in western Kentucky. Looking back, I had no idea how lucky we were to be able to do that and have those experiences. It has certainly changed over the years.

Update us on how it goes please. That was the place that I looked at and said "now I could probably swing that".

I've known Rick most of my life. I haven't quail hunted with him, but I imagine anyone that goes will have a good time. He is a story teller from way back and I would about guarantee things stay interesting. His family has had bird dogs as long as I can remember. His first dog that he started this venture with came from my dad.
