I grew up in a small town close to your area... and you're correct. Even with a desire to do better, you can't get blood from a turnip. I remember playing Thomasville back in the 80's... the years when they made deep runs in the playoffs and their games against Sweet Water were war. Our issue isn't so much that we don't have any resources, it's the fact that local school boards tie your hands. IMO, this is a bigger issue with the smaller schools because like Thomasville, so many smaller ones just don't have resources that larger schools often have. I think a separate "open" classification would be good idea.

Hence the OP’s original post and topic.

All what championships?
If i counted right (on my phone and having to scroll back and forth/ up and down and may have missed a couple), since 2000 (just picked a good round year to start), in football there have been 161 AHSAA football championship games played. Private schools won 24...public schools won 137. Hell, I bet hoover and Thompson have won as many as the all the private schools (after double checking, Hoover and Thompson combined for 16).

Double checked and updated with correct #s
Look at the numbers from 2010 on in 1a -3a and see the number of championships
Maplesville has been doing pretty good in 1A football during that time...

I'm sure there might be better examples (such as Piedmont in 3A), but Maplesville has played only one private school in the playoffs in the last ten years. Nine years ago they defeated American Christian in the first round.

Tdog93 that genius was me. I know it can be done from experience. I coached at a private school. The public schools in the area have better facilities than we did. The school administration did not value football. But the parents did. These aren’t rich parents. These are parents that sacrifice to send their kids to a cheap Christian school. It costs around 120k a year to run the football program grades 3-12 at the school. The program received about 20k a year from the school. The rest of the money was raised… not donated… raised by players and parents. Same for the baseball and basketball programs. They raised about 175k every year. They hired a good coach, the program turned around. The people in the program made it a priority and made it successful.

Don’t say it ain’t fair, call it what it is… it’s just not a priority. Do some programs have to work harder than others? Of course. Such is life. Get over it and do something about it besides complaining. Don’t accept the problem, be part of the solution.

Me and my son went to Jackson/ St. Michael’s playoff game this past Friday to watch Jackson RB Ezavier Crowell run the ball. The kid has the potential to be one of the best RB’s to ever come out of the state of Alabama. He has elite balance and vision.

That’s hilarious. We used to play Jackson. Sometimes kids would transfer there from Leroy or Thomasville. Then Powell left and kids went to thomasville. Kid left citronella and played there while I was coaching.

Jackson is really good like they were last year. But the kids in that area tend to bounce around like everywhere else.

Not a private school...

10years ago they were a part of the Shelby County school system and competed for their portion of the pie.

Now they're a part/the flagship of the Alabaster City school system.

Yes, lots of tax revenue and recrutiting has gone into building the Thompson University brand...very similar to a private school system.

^^^^That cant be happening Pwyse. You know that it's Alabama law that you have to play in your "zoned" school. They cant be bouncing around like that. Transfers are illegal in Alabama.

They don’t have to recruit them. I guarantee they are trying to go there right now. You build a good program like they have and it recruits itself.

Our school played them in the second round. We might as well had been playing UNA. It is insane how good they are and you can’t take that away from them.
It is what it is, but I do feel like they definitely have an advantage for players when you sit in the middle of a town with a population of 42,000 vs most 3a school towns are populations 6,000 or less. Our whole county population is only 29,000. So the pool to choose from is definitely less.
I’m not hating on them they have one heck of a program.

You are right they do have a more people close to the school. Most private schools are in cities. But they do compete with larger public schools for enrollment. I also know that players will drive over an hour to go to your school if your program is attractive enough. But you are right it is an advantage.

In today’s 3A Alabama state championship football game the Mars Hill Bible high school coach, Darrell Higgins, showed no class by running up the score with 17 seconds to go in the game. With the game well in hand leading by 10 points and 17 seconds to go in the game his team had the ball inside the opponents, Bayside Academy, 10 yard line. Instead of taking a knee, Higgins called time out to call a play that allowed his first string running back to score and run up the score. Simply classless coach. I had no skin in this game. I watched it on PBS. I had to look up where the schools actually were located. But from a spectator viewpoint, Coach Higgins showed no class.

Considering Mars Hill didn’t have a football program until recent times. There’s numerous public schools in the are along with other private Christian schools.

Mars Hill is still a small school by comparison. They do have excellent financial backing. The church I grew up in has as one of the bigger contributors and many of my church friends went there.

The shoals area has produced many great athletes
