Im based in the central Alabama area and wanted to do a small half acre food plot. I only have a small bit of land and it is all wooded with no real cleanings I could plant in. Would my best bet just be to buy a bag of throw and grow? I figure since it's supposed to rain tomorrow that would be a good day to. (College kid away which is why I didn't plant anything earlier)

In a wooded area with leaf litter and without openings, I don’t think you’ll get results from a throw and mow or any mix. If you had prepped ground of any sort, I’d definitely say it’s worth throwing seed. Can you at least rake or blow some leaves off?

yea I was planning to rake the leaves off and then break up the ground a little. I would just throw corn but Ill be back at college next week for another 3 weeks and then be gone most of January/feb.

Have to get with CNC on throw n mow. If is a sunny area all day you could try it. I would have plot area mowed and tilled. Plant with disc, rake, or drag. Doubt it will work l, but I would only do a 1/4 of area being it is so late. Use cheap 8-8-8 fertlizer. It ideally needs 2-3 weeks of non-freezing weather. If it does survive deer love those young tender sprouts and will eat it up. Deer love tilled ground and will usually keep checking area waiting for it come up.

Don't rack the leaves . No lime no fertilizerThrow two 50lbs bags of feed wheat out and harrow over it lightly. Go home

In February over seed with clover . Next year pull a soil sample donit right

I would recommend buying a feeder. Planting a food plot that won’t get much sunlight is tough. It’s not going to grow much at all. How big are you talking about?

I would want to just make a small plot about 35-40 meters squared. Just want a small green patch to have over the winter if possible.

If you dont plant it you sure won't.,,,,,,, Plant it . Be up in about 7 to 10 day or sooner . Throw a little nitrogen on it when you get back

I just looking at the weather. Id plant if I were you . Looks like the days be warm enough and more rain coming

For the first time in forever I got burned by planting feed wheat. Almost zero germination but it was a risk I took and oh well...... I would pay the little extra for seed wheat and throw it out heavy with some N or triple 13.

Side note---I guess demand had fallen by the time I got my seed wheat this year but it was cheaper than the feed wheat last year. Maybe just a grain market thing.

Yeah , you could be right . I have had good luck with it but I ain't planted this late much . He reads this your advice is better . I had a spot just like he has I always waited till after the leaves fell or about this time in elmore county

Trailertrash, ,,,, farm i worked on cut the wheat sold it to a local feed mill. Part of it they tested germination other part they didn't and sold it with different labels (tags) for seed or feed but be the same same wheat . Lol
