Only complaint is they are heavy and like carrying a 2x4 in the woods.
They Shoot great and solid for the price point though. Use it in the shooting house and buy you a youth model Savage for toting through the woods. Ive got a youth savage 223 thatll outshoot my weatherby 257

I have a Howa Mini that’s a smaller version of the Vanguard. Solid rifles.
I have a compact, youth model .243 savage listed in the classifieds.

It is my opinion, and it worked very well for my son, is that new hunters should start out with single shots. When they know they only have the one shot so they need to make it count, they are much more selective and careful with the shot. My son started out with a Handi-rifle in .243 and he killed plenty of deer with it. He can out shoot me now.
Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

Go to Eurooptic and get either a tikka or Sauer 100 for similar money. They are both on sale there now Would not recommend anything made by Beretta, Tikka, or Sako. Warranty is through Beretta USA and it’s awful. They sent my Tikka back rusted, scratched, and filthy. Wouldn’t make it right either.

A Weatherby Vanguard in .308 Win will do everything he ever needs done in the lower 48 except grizzly bears, from now until he retires.
You have asked an interesting question, and I am serious about this. After much thought, if I could go back 40 years and talk to the young me, this is what I would tell him - Scout for the best rifle you can find, used or new. 270, 308, 7mm mag, 7mm-08, 30-06, 7x57 Mauser, 300 win, whatever reasonable deer caliber. Buy the best German/Austrian scope available, used or new. Hunt for the next 60 years and be happy. When you can afford a backup, buy similar to your first. Scope and rifle requirements remain, caliber can change if desired.
I am in no way saying that other calibers won't work. That would be in direct conflict to my caliber addiction, and therefore not rational.
What I am saying as an absolute truth, is that one rifle, in an effective caliber, with an outstanding scope, is everything that a man NEEDS.
What a man wants, as a desire, is an entirely different matter. I have killed critters with dozens of rifles, in at least a dozen calibers (maybe 2-4x that, just cant remember well at the moment), but just kept searching for a better mousetrap.

I have 4 vanguards in 7 mag and everyone of them will shoot sub moa. I like the vanguard 2 the best. I don't know why other than it has better glass.... Also had an American in 308. A little varget and it'll put 3 in a nickel....

My first rifle was a 30-06 Weatherby Vanguard. They are tack drivers but like others have said very heavy
