Just logging in for first time this season. Got the biggest doe I’ve got in a long time at Cahaba WMA. When going to retrieve arrow and start tracking I stepped in a hole made by a rotted tree. It was fully covered in pine straw. Almost broke my ankle as my foot bent backwards as I fell in and forward. I immediately got up to walk it off knowing I might not be able to but I did manage to do so, track deer, haul it out and gut it. The pain wasn’t too bad as long as I didn’t move ankle in certain ways but by time I woke up this morning it is shot. On crutches now. So hoping it’ll heal up soon.
The deer were eating white oak acorns. I found an oak island in a pine farm. The oaks were growing in a gulch created by strip mined land after restoration so no clear cutting had happened there.

In the it could be worse category, there's the recent story of a 60yo fell backwards out of his climber. The top cable broke and his feet stayed locked into the bottom. Both ankles are toast. He was hanging upside down until his son could get help to get him down. Harness, but wasn't going to attach it until up where he wanted to be. It's a pain, but I slide mine up and down as I go.
I step in enough holes every year, one will get me eventually. Get well soon!

It's a pain, but I slide mine up and down as I go. YES! It’s a huge pain I cuss it every time too… but I do it now, didn’t always (like up until the past couple years). We owe it to our family and it definitely makes me feel safer.

I have the rope HSS tether and its not bad at all sliding up the tree as you go up. Very easy to diy those. I put them on every ladder stand. I do two tethers to one rope for double stands. When my kids were small they had trouble with them. So I belayed them up by a separate rope. Climbing over 45 is like being intoxicated. Your vision and reaction speed are as though impaired compared to thirty years ago.

On the ladders with shooting rests that flip up and out of the way, do you go over or under the rest with the tether? I ordered a handful of tethers last week and trying to picture what makes the most sense to keep it out of the way when hunting.

Under, then over the seat to the tree. I made an extension for my harness because I hunt out of face-the-tree climbers. It's easier to tuck out of the way when in a ladder stand.
