Dealing with this with my mother. Took her keys away after 2 accidents in a month. It’s been a rough 30 days since. “I’ve taken her freedom away and I’m mean and hateful”. 🙄

I’m sorry that you are going through that. It’s painful watching loved ones who develop challenges.

No it isn't, for all concerned.

Sure hope I don’t go down that road.

I agree! Dementia and Alzheimers are terrible diseases to watch anyone go through. My Dad and Grandma had it before they passed and it was a struggle to see the effects.

Obviously if the OP is blessed to have a Dad he’s never had to dress him or take his keys. It’s not easy

When I was 7 my dad and I were driving through Eufaula, north bound on 431 by Napa, next thing I know I’m waking up and I looked through the windshield and my dad was shaking an old lady who was laying across the front seats if her old Chevy caprice. She was deader than hell. My forehead had hit the shifter and was sticking out like I was a cone head fr. Her kids had taken her keys but she had a hair appointment she had to go to. She ran right through the donut king red light across 3 lanes of traffic before we t boned her.

One of the saddest I saw was when I was working a flight. I’m at the gate and we are boarding the aircraft. It’s time to go and I’m missing one passenger. I noticed to my left there was this older gentleman and ask his name. The passenger I’m looking for. I said it’s time to go. He said time to go where? Ok red flags went up. Sir you are booked on this flight. His response was I’m not flying today. Long story short his kids dropped him off at the airport and left him. This guy was way out of it. I figured dementia. When the kids came back to get him it was a full blown ass chewing from the airport police and paramedics.

For those who don't want to alienate them. Just disconnect the battery. They can have the keys. But for whatever reason you cannot figure out why it won't crank. Put a note on the battery in case they call someone else to repair it.

I got a call from my FIL to come take him to lunch
He wasn’t supposed to be driving but when I got to his house he was behind the wheel of his truck ready to go
I asked him if he was ok to drive and he said of course
The cafe was only a mile away
That was the scariest ride of my life but we made it there safely
I was trying to think of the best way to tell him he didn’t need to drive anymore when we were getting ready to leave
We walked out the door and he handed me the keys and said you better drive us home
He never drove again after that day

When I need expert advice I tend to talk to myself
The older I get the better I used to be
