Welcome to the Libertarian party...

I agree with you. There is a lot of public sentiment these recent years leaning more towards isolationism and away from globalism. Personally I'm happy about it.

If the United States pulls out of policing the world like we have been doing since WWII, I'm not sure it will be a better place though. Hopefully it will make us a richer and more prosperous country not having to spend all that money to protect and defend all of our friends worldwide.

Isolationism is great until you’re over run

The question is when to get involved if ever

History if full of bad choices. Figuring it out in real time is the hard part

That's exactly right. You would think we would have learned something.

What was it Achilles says in THE ILIAD . . . "War is old men talking and young men dying." Maybe it was Odysseus.

So true.

Unfortunately we will never see true peace in this life, because we live in a Fallen World.

Modern war functions first to pass money around amongst elites and second to induce hatred of other countries greater than hatred of your overseers. The scheme cannot end because our warriors must be kept out busy and out of the country. If they were idle, and in-country, the elites and overseers would be less secure.

Irish (and all others who served), thank you.

I did not serve so my opinion doesnt take those experiences into account.

But my thoughts on the Ukraine situation are:

1. Ukraine is one of the most corrupt nations on the planet. That is why so many of our politicians have family involved in businesses there (so they can get kickbacks)
2. There isnt anything that I know of that we need from Ukraine that we cannot get from other places.
3. We keep pushing Russia by adding NATO member nations. I think (and might be wrong) that when the Soviet Union collapsed we made certain promises to the USSR to get them to give up the nukes that were in Ukraine and other places, one of those conditions was that we would not expand NATO. But like out government so often does, it lied, and proceeded to add just about every country on the border with the new Russian Republic.

I believe we (as a western nation) have far more in common with the Russians that we do with the Chinese or Middle Easterners. The things we have in common should be strengthened with Russia and less with China. China is our real enemy. I am not saying that the Russians are our friends but I dont think they want to dominate the world or attack us (like China is planning).

Those are just my opinions and opinions are like assholes, everyone has one.

I love my country, but don't trust my government.

War costs life but it also prevents tyranny. Y'all are thinking macro and that's true but we don't hear of a troublemaker dying of a heart attack at lunch or some banana Republic despot catching Mr.168 in the head. I think we've become so reliant on the military industrial complex to avoid ground fighting through technology in the name of safety we've lost operational effectiveness. I struggle with my chemically addled brain to wonder why we don't have a Reagan or Roosevelt to run our country. I look back at the Berlin airlift flex and know that no terrorist or group of camel humpers could survive if Big Military started putting boots to asses for a sustained attack it could be over before it started good. Course I'm just an Internet Goober.

I can get on board with this.

Isn't what you are saying exactly what the Russians are doing in Ukraine? Sending waves and waves of human beings against a near peer adversary?

Any country should 100% stand up to defend themselves. Militaries should generally be defensive in nature, similar to what the Swiss have.

Aldeer's really cool. Not disagreeing with you Irish, the "problem" is politicians control the military for the most part so now we add political expediency greed power money favors business as opposed to simple offense defense. Militaries should only defend but politicians are Offensive minded. I've heard the argument at several gun schools civilians/police defense Military offense. Which is fine in personal defense and would work nationally if our leaders weren't beholding to the donors who need us to spend on military hardware. Switzerland successfully maintained neutrality through its geography plus the fact that lots of Swiss households have both the Sig 220 and 550 Smg's So invaders will have to go through a Mountain chain somehow and when they get to the X every Swiss is going to start shooting at them. Not a great plan. I'm out.

Man has been waging war for as long as he has been in existence. I would think anyone would realize that it is a part of human nature and will be here as long as we are. Better to realize that and take steps to defend yourself than to isolate and quickly be conquered and controlled. After WWI, many Americans were in the "mind our own business" camp until Dec 7th 1941

Glad you made this post. riding a chopper to almost certain death the realization is that if you survive the patrol it only proves you were lucky. If you get killed, it's got nothing to do with your courage or bravery, only that you were unlucky. You realize your courage isn't special. YOU are playing roulette with YOUR life. The sense of moral superiority is underpinned by a level of military strength that entitles us to do _______ without ever giving the real possibility of defeat a second thought. You are looking out the door and there 6 guys 5 of which are nervous scared to death and know once we start to go into the LZ all bets are off. Death is on the menu. You look over at your team member on your right and the guy is over there chewing gum ready to go out the door like he's riding the subway to work. He hasn't figured it out yet but he soon will. And you are going to be repeating this for months on end.

The adrenaline rush from risking your life.... is your life worth losing for a majority that would otherwise see you dead beyond the money and other benefits you are pouring into their country?

Can't explain it other than you don't want to find yourself there. If you are picking up what I'm putting down that's what all this glorified "freedom" fighting really looks like riding along staring down at a little piece of tape you put over the end of your gun barrel...

We don't know how to NOT "F" it up. That's our biggest problem and all the reason needed to NOT engage.

I think the reason that a country gets attacked is either:

A. Some powerful, crazy leader wants your country's stuff.

B. You country is meddling in stuff they have no business meddling in.

I think in hindsight both of those things were going on when Japan attacked us in WWII. Japan had some pretty militaristic, nationalistic people in charge and wanted access to natural resources and were actively taking them. At the same time the US was actively trying to constrain them. We are basically doing the same thing to China right now that we did to Japan prior to WWII, except on an even larger scale. I think we call it the Containment strategy.

The United States has a very long history of meddling in affairs that we really have no business meddling in. Each time we justified that it was all in the name of National Security. Maybe it was, maybe it wasn't. I can't think of a time that another country attacked us, because they wanted our land and our stuff. Being separated by two oceans helps a lot.

I think we need to decide if we...

A. Want to live over here in peace on a heavily defended island.

or

B. Want to be the World Police and every time some other country does something we don't like, we send our boys and girls over there to fight and die.

The problem with the "A" is that none of us that is alive right now remember us ever doing anything other than "B" and to do anything else would makes us seem weak.

I sure do hate to agree with this, but I'm afraid that I must. We live in a fallen world in which each and every one of us are sinners. We can make a choice to change ourselves and try to influence our little corner of the world, but that doesn't mean that our brother or our neighbor is going to do the same. It's just in men's hearts to make war, steal, rape, lie, covet, etc. There is even a war in heaven since Satan decided that he should be worshipped like the Father and Son. Unfortunately, he has quite a following, and many of his followers are in a position of power. Heaven isn't exempt from war so why would we think that earth could be.

You are both confusing having and maintaining a strong military with going out and actively making war against someone else.

True good guys don't make war against other people for vanity or profit. The true good guys only go to war to defend their people or their property.

Yep, war is a necessary evil.
The conviction that war is never morally acceptable would eventually lead to a weak and relatively defenseless country.
