What is the average cost per hour of dozer work to improve roads on private land?

$100-180/Hour

I recently looked into this. For an independent operator price seemed to rnage from $150-250/hr depends on size of the dozer, how big the job is and how far away they'll have to travel.

It’s been a few years since we looked into it.

If it is a job that can be done in a day $200+ hr + one way travel on the hourly rate.

Multi-day job - probably around $175/hr.

However as already stated - depends on the size of the dozer. It can get expensive quick, but that equipment is very expensive and probably worth every penny. It might also be worth looking into their reputation, a good operator can make a big difference.

30+ years ago we had a very large and nice (AC/heated cab - really good handling machine) Case backhoe and charged $125/hir minimum 4-hours and one-way travel. A guy told my stepdad that the price was outrageous and there was no way he’d pay it. My stepdad told him to grab a shovel. A few days later the guy called back and had my stepdad do the work. Afterwards the guys told my stepdad that is was worth every cent.

Depends on size of machine . Bout $150 is low as it gets for a small machine around here. Most guys charge a minimum to cover moving , say 4-8 hours.

Sizing the machine to the job is important along with a GOOD operator . The operator can make you or break you. If you are moving dirt and taking out sizable trees , get a midsized - large machine. Sweeping out roads , pushing small stuff , not moving dirt a long ways , a small machine will work. If you are working in timber and not taking it out , it is possible to get a machine that's too big.

They range from $125-$180 around here plus transport fees depending on the job/distance. Some charge by the linear foot and that can get expensive.

What are you looking to get done and location?

Don’t overlook renting a skid steer. We have a John Deere 455G track loader on the farm, we also have a tichachi? TL8 skid steer on the farm. That skid steer will walk circles around that 455g, it’s faster and just as strong if you know what you’re doing. Joker will push over a sweet gum the size of a 5 gallon bucket. That’s saying something for what it is.

Have you thought about renting one from a rental company and doing it yourself?

It'd cost me several hundred per day to rent equipment, then I'd need about $60/hr to make a living out of it. That's assuming I had jobs scheduled every day. There's your $150/day. Cheap. You add some old fence, I need a laborer to help with, and it just keeps going up.

Can I get a government loan to buy a Caterpillar? This science gig was a lot more interesting 20 years ago. Now I just want to buy a bulldozer and play Tonka toys for a living.

I charge 150 an hr for my machine. Anytime I gotta travel a ways from home I charge to get it there

I run a brand new D5 gps Tremble System wide track that replaced the D6s. It's like a 6T. A medium sized machine we call them.


We're probably the largest excavating company in the state and it costs us $1k a day not including the operator pay. That's the way they have it factored in when they look at cost. We have probably 15 dozers running everyday. Maybe 20.

There's more competition right now in Alabama than we've ever had. Everyone is bidding for 2 and 3 percent profit on these jobs. Site work, land development type. I'm not taking about Billy Bobs backhoe service, I mean the big excavating companies. Mass grading, highways, pads, subdivisions, parking lots, gas stations, we do it all.

It's very expensive and very hard to get a good operator. I've been doing it 20yrs and only trust 5 operators id say.

Now there's a bunch of people claiming to be legit and all they do is rent a machine and make a mess.

If they don't own their own machine, don't hire them.

What I think Jacob is trying to say is, “PAY ONCE, CRY ONCE” and I’d have to agree with him. I’m no operator but know enough to make a mess….
