I'd like to know what the state of Alabama does with this money they get from these auctions. Why could they not let it be public hunting land? Can anyone answer these questions?

Assuming general fund.
And it’d become a headache for the state if it was public. They have hard enough time keeping most WMA’s from becoming dumping grounds, I’d expect these lots would get trashed quickly.
A lot of the properties are landlocked.

I'd like to know what the state of Alabama does with this money they get from these auctions. Why could they not let it be public hunting land? Can anyone answer these questions? My email said what the funds went toward. It was not the general fund. I just deleted the email so I’ll see if I can find it and post. Seems like it was toward mental health and something else.

The lands being auctioned are held by a variety of state agencies and if I remember, funds received are directed to the agencies of ownership for each tract. The one I am bidding on is owned by the Alabama Department of Mental Health so that is where the funds will be directed. The original owner died without heirs and donated the land to the agency. The reason they aren't turned in to WMAs or public land is that most of the tracts are small and scattered so there is not a largest enough concentration of acreage to make it feasible, I'm guessing.

Friend of mine was there today. He said a lot of tracts went for $30-$40-$50 per acre. CRAZY!! They must be covered up with one fiddies behind every tree.....

People were very respectful. Some tracts went for stupid money and some went unleased. Tracts I paid attention to around Tuscaloosa went for no less than 20/acre and some pushing 35/acre.

Im hunting on my own property at that rate. I do hunt in the Mississippi Delta but only about 5 times a year, Guy I hunt with charges 200.00 a day so thats enough for me. Im getting old so this will probably be my last year.

Only gonna get worse and has each year. Will have to have 40 members just to play unless u got deep pockets. The good ol days are long gone of leasing land cheap

We are marking to market the next market rate for leasing land.
I bought a small tract 5 years ago and every year I’m more thankful I’m out the leasing / hunting club game.

Most of these tracts are owned by different state departments (education, mental health, etc.) State Lands Division is responsible for the leasing assignments of these tracts. Not the habitat management or infrastructure. They aren’t suitable for WMAs or public access because of the small acreages and usually they have absolutely terrible access. They go back up for lease renewals every 5 years.
