Yesterday I had a very nice buck step out at about 180 yards. I’m shooting a 270 with a 140 grain accubonds loaded with 58 grains of H4831SC and Federal 210 primers. I’m not a great shot but I rarely miss. I had it right on the shoulder when I squeezed the trigger. Gun goes bang. Then a big puff of white smoke . So much I couldn’t see the deers reaction or the exact direction he ran. I found no blood no hair and no deer. I looked for well over an hour. Went got my buddy and looked again. Nothing! The white smoke bothers me. Could it be possible that my primer was not hot enough??? I’m very careful when I load ammo. I know the powder measure was correct. I just don’t see how I could have missed that deer. The gun was dead on two weeks before the opening of the season. Any ideas???

Is it possible that a bit of case lube got inside the case and contaminated the charge? Only other thing i can think of would be something blocking most of the flash hole or a projectile too small of diameter "not likely".

New one on me. Never seen a big wad of white smoke from smokeless powder.

You gonna pull them pistols, or whistle Dixie?

The only time I saw white smoke from smokeless was an old paper shell shotgun round I just wanted to get rid of years ago. I figured it was water/moisture contamination. It went bang but not with the normal power and white smoke filled the sky between me and the bird.

I'm going with contaminated powder or corroded primer.Shoot another round to check.

Sounds like contaminated powder…like moisture, case lube or oil had gotten into the case

If the powder was contaminated and did not fire as it should have, check your barrel to make absolute sure that the bullet fully exited the barrel before you chamber and fire another round.
