My son will be driving soon. So it's time to find him a ride. I've come across an auto auction place nearby, and I'm planning to check it out a bit on Saturday. I just purchased an Ancel AD410 code reader.
I have zero experience with auctions, and not much experience buying used. Any advice for purchasing from an auction? Is that a bad idea and should we go find something and buy direct from an owner?
We both like older trucks and think that'd be pretty cool, but the idea of finding a gem at the auction has grabbed my attention for now.

If you don't know your stuff about cars, I definitely wouldn't waste my time at an auction. I grew up at auctions and worked as a mechanic and there's no way id buy a car from anyone without that mechanic experience. There's too much to look for and it takes years to really know what you're doing.
Even after all my experience, id never buy a vehicle with any type of engine misfire. I got burned once with a 4wd truck hoping it just needed a tuneup and the damn thing had a dead cylinder. Entire engine was bad but the only way to know it was a compression test.
Never buy one from a guy in a mechanic jacket 😂
Not only am I looking at the engine and drivetrain, I'm looking at the body for a wreck. I never buy one thats been repainted anywhere on the car. Clean title only. Blow by. Bad wiring. Water damage. Rust. And lots more to look for.

I knew a number of people that used a broker near Maxwell AFB; ended up using him twice with pretty good results. He tended to want to deal with newer vehicles though so when I was looking for older/cheaper I had to go elsewhere. His people would go to the auctions looking for what you wanted and you could get the vehicles checked out before purchase

My advice is have some patience , pay a little more and buy a clean vehicle from an individual . You can get some good deals at the auctions , but can get a huge lemon, money pit if you aren't very auto savvy .

Too many people spend money they don't have , on things they don't need, to impress people they don't know.
