If it’s in a hay field, I’d haul some topsoil to it and start planting on top of that. Obviously, it depends on how big of an area it is and if that soil that I haul in will stay there. If that wouldn’t work, I’d focus elsewhere to make something desirable for deer. Maybe plant that area with something in the spring to build the soil up and in a few years it’ll be dry enough to plant in fall.

It is usually inaccessible from late December until the middle of June. Deer haven is the real reason I bought it. I just love to take an evening off and watch deer feed in it. Sounds like a good place to plant beans or corn in the summer and let it stand. But it being a hayfield that you make money off of, I see how that could be a problem. I don’t know of anything that grows in wet, cold soil. But if it’s in deer haven, just enjoy the time there and plant the high spots if you want to plant something there (if there is one)?? Good luck with it!!

Think of it as a cover crop. We throw out crimson clover, wheat and daikon. I prefer rye to wheat but whichever. Bushog over the top when it’s dry enough and should be fine. As long as that seed gets covered more or less has always worked for me. I’ll broadcast

Wheat will germinate on concrete if it gets a rain followed by 3 cloudy days. Yup some years i have a nice greenfield in my truck bed.

Wheat will germinate on concrete if it gets a rain followed by 3 cloudy days. Yup some years i have a nice greenfield in my truck bed. i always get a good stand around where i planted . be surprised how good winter peas will do just being spread out in a thick grassy spot .

The lady who works there at G&O has children here at school and I see her every morning. I will check with her tomorrow on the radishes! I have not had good luck with them in the past. They leaf out and make very little radish. I havent seen Matt out here in a while. He usually visits the Fennell Farm but I have not laid eyes on him this year. I see the other salesman at least once a week. I want to give the radishes a try here at the Tuckier Tract.

Gonna go hard after the deer hunters etc planting needs. So should be stocking up on everything needed. I’ll let you know if they can get some daikon.

Those rates can be adjusted to fit whatever suits someone…..Somebody planting bigger fields might cut back on the cereal grains so that they didn’t get so thick in the spring…..That’s a good starting point though

Thx. woulda guessed 150lbs. on the cereal grains. Pl disregard my email. You might want to when you first start when soil conditions are still poor.....Rates can range though from 50-150 just depending on your objectives, size of fields, browsing pressure, etc

I have a tract of ground that stays wet once fall arrives and the 12 inches of rain I got last week has it soaked. I tried yesterday to disk it with my 4 wheeler and mired down almost instantly pulling the disk. I like to have never got the pull behind disk out of the field. It doesn’t look all that wet until you try to drive on it. I want to ask to see about the throw & mow plantings. If I broadcast the seeds on the ground and run over them with the 4 wheeler only to make good ground contact, will I get a good stand. I always disk and then plant but this area might not allow for me to do that this year. I don’t know if we will dry out enough this fall to allow me to plant so I am looking at any options on a green field. With a hurricane brewing in the tropics it don’t look promising for disking it.
Help me out with what I need to do. All input is greatly appreciated. Spray it seed it mow it if you can. If you can’t mow don’t worry about it. I hunted a swamp that our fields would stay a foot under water through August. We did it the way I described and always had fields until it flooded again.
