With the number of trail cams that I'm running, I have a lot of dead AA batteries collected (both alkaline and lithium). Where in your area do you take dead batteries for disposal?

I realize you probably shouldn't just throw them away, but I do.

Recycle mine at the city recycle center. They have separate bins for lithium versus alkaline, I believe. I haven’t used my lithium enough to have run down their capacity yet to know for sure on those.

I suspect a lot of folks do the same thing. I know that the landfill that the household garbage goes to takes a lot of stuff that the local landfills do not so maybe it is acceptable to do that.

I always just throw mine in Lake Guntersville. Car batteries too. Just kidding. I saw a fishing guide on Smith Lake throw two used up D batteries into the water. A few years back on a stripe fishing trip. I was a little surprised, but not shocked.

Or I throw them at tailgaters when I can't get my truck to belch a load of rollycoalsmoke.

Lowes has a disposal container for batteries. From the web, it looks like they only accept rechargeable batteries - mostly tool batteries. Does your Lowe's offer something different???

I don’t think they’re easily recyclable.
Even car batteries just get turned into bird shot.

Trash can...I'm not goiong out of my way or pay to have a handful of batteries thrown away How to Dispose of BatteriesDisposing of Alkaline Batteries
Most places don’t accept single-use alkaline batteries for recycling. You can’t take single-use batteries to Call2Recycle drop-off sites at The Home Depot.
In most places, you can put alkaline batteries, such as AA, AAA and D batteries, in the trash. They can be carried out to the curb with the rest of your household garbage. Many landfills will also accept trash bags that contain alkaline batteries. However, in the state of California, it is illegal to throw away any kind of battery, including alkaline batteries.
Even when single-use batteries can no longer run devices, they can still produce current. They can be hazardous if discarded improperly. Collect used household batteries in a container. A cardboard box or plastic tub is a safe option. Prevent any fire risk by taping 9-volt battery terminals before getting rid of them. You can use a piece of masking, electrical or duct tape.
Recycling Single-Use Batteries
Alkaline batteries, like AA, AAA and D batteries can be harmful to the environment when thrown away. You should recycle them when possible.
Alkaline batteries are not accepted at The Home Depot or at most places that offer battery recycling. Instead of dropping off your alkaline batteries in person, you can mail order a recycling kit for them. Call2Recycle is one of the companies that offer mail-in battery recycling kits. The kit comes with a container that you can use to collect dead single-use batteries.
When the container gets full, you can mail your alkaline batteries to a recycling center. The fees for the recycling kits vary, depending on the size of the batteries and the company you chose for your recycling.

The EPA says it's ok too just chunk alkalines in the trash. I don't deal with lithium so don't know. Rechargeables, including power tool types I take to the Home Depot recycle box.
