I have a weird one.
Mower has a Kawasaki fx730 and it starts to die about 10 min into mowing tall grass. It acts like it overheats because it will crank back up if I let it sit for a min or two. Any ideas?
If I go full choke once it start dying, it will keep it from dying for the most part but you can tell the power is lacking.

I'd suggest checking the air filter. My mower has a kawasaki also, a few years ago, it acted like it had no power, would really die going uphill. A new air filter solved my problem.

I’ll check that out. I was thinking coil packs at first but then I realized it’ll keep going if I give it full choke so now I don’t know what to think with it. May be a normal thing but grass is tall, but not thick enough that I think it should overheat the mower.

What frogeye said. It’s bogging down due to incorrect fuel/air mixture.

I would change the fuel filter, if it hasn't been done lately.

Sounds like fuel filter isn't letting enough fuel through. After it kills, bowl fills back up.

Try taking the gas cap off. The check valve in mine went bad. It would make a lap and cut off. Wait a minute and crank back up. I drilled a sixteen inch hole in the cap,and it’s been running ever since.

I just worked on a buddy of mines Exmark and chased my tail around for a week. Acting like a fuel issue sometimes, or a heat issue, then maybe an electrical issue. Ended up being the kill switch on the seat. Basically, did a hero kit. Had recently done service, oil/air/fuel filter, new blades. Would run but would stop intermittently. Had to choke it to get it fired back up. So, we put a new fuel pump and cheap chinese carb from Amazon on. Still issues. Changed out the parking brake switch. Still an issue, then the seat switch and that remedied it. Really odd.
I would do the air filter first, but if that don't get it, do the fuel pump and fuel filter.

It has dual tanks and it’s an issue that I’m 99.9% sure has happened on both tanks. It started doing it last year but I just never got around to changing the coil packs to trying to fix it. It does fine when I’m mowing the 2 acres or so I do regularly. There’s just another 4 that I do every third time or so. I’m going back out to try in a couple hours and I’ll try to loosen the cap of it starts dying on me and get a new fuel filter if that doesn’t do the trick

Sounds like coil issue. When Ive had Kawaski engine issue like that its almost always a bad coil.

Sounds like coil issue. When Ive had Kawaski engine issue like that its almost always a bad coil. That’s what I was thinking til I could keep it going by playing with the choke. I already got the new coil packs sitting in the garage. It’s just been on my never ending to-do list

Drained and filled with non ethanol. Guy at the gas station said water will start forming in 9 days with ethanol based gas. Good luck

Just tried again and made it 30min til it started again. I loosened the gas cap all the way and it didn’t help at all. Going to try fuel filter and coil packs next.
I don’t think it’d be water in the gas since I use the non ethanol towards the end of season when I know it’s going to sit for an extended period of time and I usually run the tank dry before switching to the other side to make sure I’m keeping the gas fresh. It also doesn’t happen with my average mow. Just when I keep it under a decent load for 20-30 min.

I had a similar issue…but it was on a kohler…only thing that fixed it was sellin it an buyin another mower…no issues since

Im pretty sure i have the same engine on my scag. I would try the fuel filter first. Mine was doing the exact same thing. Finally narrowed it down to the fuel filter. Had the slightest crack in it that you had to look at close just to see it. Fixed my problem
