Looking at one for my son. Are these bullet proof pretty much like other 4 runners?

Uhhhhh…. That will be a 4.7L…they are the engine all others are compared too..it is the MOST! reliable of all toyota engines…the millyun mile(plus now) motor. I will say..of all the platforms that engine was put in…the 4runners for whatever reason were prone to exhaust leaks..i think cracked manifolds to be perzctly right…yes..it can be fixed..im not sure it will be very cheap..nothing is…but its not the end of the world..but its a kinda common thing on those units..my biL had one with the cracked manifolds..he drove it a long time before he gotem fixed. The v8 4runners are gettin kinda rareish…they are small..so that v8 will make it into a space shuttle.

I had a 4wd 2003 V8 for 9 years that I sold in 2016. Only mechanical problem I recall was the brakes, it had an unusual number of brake problems of various sorts. I also wasn't a huge fan of the dash layout and controls, not very ergonomic compared to the 2nd Gen I had. But, it could pretty much go anywhere and do anything, which made up for it.

I drove a 4.7 V8 1998 Landcruiser to 276k and now have a 2005 with 156k miles. ZERO problems.
Those engines are as bulletproof as any engine ever built.

That’s the same engine the gx470 has. Strong engine.

Aren't the V8 runners full time 4X4 ?

Yes but it’s essentially AWD with a differential that can be locked. Full time 4wd isn’t compatible with pavement driving.

It’s just like the LandCruiser and the GX470

Wife had one, great engines. Hers was only 2wd and was not common I believe. Most were AWD in that platform. It would flat out scoot and averaged about 18 mpg. She had 259k miles on hers before we moved on to another vehicle.

Clint, I forgot to tell you that Joe had a Land Cruiser and it had the V8 in it. He drove it over 300,000 and never had a lick of trouble.. He sold his, and it went overseas to some country. I can't remember which one. His brought a strong price even with that mileage. He turned around and bought another one from Ronnie Garner. His lot is right across from the fairgrounds in Muscle Shoals. Might want to give him a call and see what he says he can get for you. I think he is a member on here, but don't know his screen name.

Good luck!

The V8 in that gen Runner has a belt. V6 has a chain.

Correct on the belt; but the earlier Cruiser's had an inline 4.5 six cylinder with a chain. Underpowered; but bullet proof as well. Not sure about the 4Runner.
