I had a former coworker whose father was one of the bigwigs in the Dixie Mafia in Mississippi. Lots of them were Slovenian descent and called “Itches, b******, stitches” because of their last names. The Dixie Mafia had some presence around Mobile and I know they had dealings with the Italian Mafia at times.

Listening to this on YouTube. I had no idea Phenix City was like this. If I’m not mistaken they had to send in state police or the guard. Declared martial law anyway.

It was bad enough that they made a biopic about it called "The Phenix City Story", I believe was the name of it. Old Black and White movie that is still shown on occasion of TMC. That's where I saw it. Of course, it was watered down so it could be shown in those days, but Phenix City was the model of a corrupt town, of all the corrupt towns.
Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

General George Patton threatened to flatten the city with his tanks if nothing changed and had the military put on lockdown from going there. It’s on YouTube.

The heyday / golden years of organized street crime is long gone.
There’s too many cameras, cell phones, and technology in general to be a known crime figure these days. They can’t do anything too lucrative or kill anyone because there’s 100,000 ways to get tied to a crime.

There’s too many cameras, cell phones, and technology in general to be a known crime figure these days. They can’t do anything too lucrative or kill anyone because there’s 100,000 ways to get tied to a crime.

Dixie Mafia was not one group it was many small groups, mostly just low class thugs. Just like the group in NW AL, Ms, TN. you know Walking Tall, they were just 7/8 guys. I’m born and raised in Columbus, old enough to knowmany of the people from the early 50’s in Phenix City. I knew Hughbo Bently, his dad was determined to clean up PC, they blew his house up with dynamite, Hughbo, his mom and brother was in the house amazing they were not killed. I remeber my dad showing me where the killed Albert Patterson the Alabama Atty General. 90 percent of the crooks were not from Phenix City, some of the employees were from PC, when the guard came in they scattered like rats back to where they came from. Suprise, all of these businesses had licenses to operate that was obtained from Montgomery, The state knew what was going on but was collecting so much tax money the just ignored it until it Patterson was murdered then the had to act. One reason I would rather not have gambling at all in Alabama the cost does not out weight the benifit, a lot of the money will go to places and people you do now approve of.
