Kids today know how to use computers but they have to learn how to use tools.

Our generation grew up knowing how to use tools, but we had to learn how to use computers.

I think that is one of the major differences between our generation and the tech generation. Many of us grew up in the 80's and 90's with computers being something that we basically grew up and learned and developed at the same time. But we always seemed to naturally know how to use hammers and screwdrivers and firearms, etc...

Kids today know computers and screens and buttons as natural as we knew hand tools and mechanical stuff. That is why younger kids have such a different perspective than us. The perspective is so different in some cases that its basically like a polar bear trying to figure out an Amazonian tree frog. There is no point of reference for the Polar Bear to even begin to figure out what the heck the frog even is.

When my pre-teen kids act like they know everything and dad’s stupid, I like to remind them I once had to teach them how to use a spoon….they rarely have any comeback

I know people in their 50s with advanced degrees that can't change a spark plug... It is getting worse though. Most of today's kids can't do anything but run a smart phone.

failure of adults to actually teach children how to do everyday stuff...everyday.

I think it's partly geographical and parental. My son and group of friends up here raised hell growing up like your typical rednecks, hated school, raced MX, and had each others back. Kind of like we grew up in Satsuma. In summer, they bucked hay for the local farmers, thousands of bales each year and even hauled the loads back to the farms in trucks with a stick. Today they're in their late 20's and each one of them have great work ethics and a blue collar job with transferable skills. They can take a truck apart and put it back together to boot. Early on after he graduated I thought he was in for a tough lesson in life but, he's turned out to be a pretty good dude.

My 28yrs in the military on the other hand had me experience working with and/or having to lead people from all walks of life and all age groups. Some of the young ones were clueless with work/life issues. Some you could guide through it and they turned out great. Others wouldn't/couldn't adapt and ended up leaving after their time, most didn't have the work ethics to do the job without being coddled.

Also skinny: We also see the computer as a tool to use, and not part of our life.

I met a 20 year old this week who is making high-quality furniture. And he’s not helping out Daddy either. It’s all him. I was very impressed.

Parents traded their kids off for car payments and big houses.

They had rather be in debt, dump their kid at daycare rather than stay home and cook and raise the kid. What we see the results now.

lol. Old folks talking about kids and electronics……..with electronics.

Right. My adult kids still dont understand how I can drive across country and find a single obscure location without looking at a phone once.

And respect has gone out the window - its a diff day - a soft generation is here - rock bottom for all is in our future - sowing and reaping is real - the i dont want to work generation is here

And we will reap it 😀

I only broke one stud on a '52 Mercury before I was rescued by an old guy.

My Grandson was a 100% computer nerd, no sports, barely got outside on his own.

He got into ROTC and eventually joined the Army. I was thinking Oh Boy, he would never make it through basic.

He did and is now 101 Airborne as a Apache mechanic. Done a couple of tours of duty, Iraq, Afganistan, Poland, Germany.

He now is 25 and looks like a Man.

I am so proud.

Im a pretty capable individual…i get upset when i get around anybody thats not capable..young or old….i met a guy from California yesterday who thought the sewer department had to come activate his toilets….no idea they run on fresh water….if your an adult male over the age of 18….i expect you to be able to: change oil, plumb a toilet, clean a carburetor, sharpen a chainsaw, sharpen mower blades, read a tape measure, know how to use the pythagorean theorem, write in legible cursive, dig square holes and round holes, change a flat, change a spark plug, bleed the air out of injector lines, repair your basic water leak..replace an electrical outlet…change a breaker…build a coffee table, grow a garden…and put up a mail box…these are basic skills to me…i would assume you can all do these things…i do not work on air conditioners or freezers…i can change the 3 amp fuse in my air handler…but thats aboyt as far as i go and will not fool with hvac much…i come from poor people who fix their own problems…if you cant build a barn or a deck…or finish a little concrete…maybe adjust the valves on an engine…you basically a waste of oxygen…is that too harsh.🧐

Not harsh at all . I can do all that an more . Just don’t depend on anyone but myself for 99% of things needed done . Fix go right now and saw up lumber on my portable sawmill to build my own barn a work on my cedar gun cabinet. Don’t need computer or phone for any that just common sense

My son, when training to be an inspector, was raised on tech and knew how to use some, but not all tools. Was well versed in one, and competent in the other. He took to inspecting and is the best in the region in my opinion.

I took on an very good Master electrician who's my age, thinking I could fast track him into the field. 3 years later he's still not solo. May never be. The tech, phone, app just gives him fits. Best electrician in the business. But the app dominates him.

My middle brother was extremely mechanically inclined. I am moderately mechanically inclined, extremely woodworking / power tool inclined and did tech work for 25 years as a side job to firefighting. Now inspecting in retirement.

When my son was growing up, he had a friend, now maybe 28, who could strip any motor down to the bolts, repair and put it back together again. Kid was amazing, but couldn't finish a book to save his life.

GOD gave us all talents. If we let him steer us, he will place us where we need to be. I know that's the case with me.
