I was going over some financial stuff with my grandmother the other day and she showed me some burial policies she bought right after my grandfather joined the military. Soon after they were married. I asked her, "why would you buy burial polices that young?". Times were lean and they did not come from money at all, by grandmother's family were sharecroppers who picked cotton by hand.
She explained that in those times it was common because no one had "any" money to bury you if you died. Not a proper burial with a decent casket and all. I was thinking today you just make a Facebook post with a GoFundMe and you can get you a decent funeral, if you was a nice guy.
Just goes to show the level of "hard-times" back in rural Alabama around the 1940s.

My FIL was a Vietnam vet, USAF. When he died a couple years ago the MIL was able to exercise the burial benefit they enrolled for back in the 60's. It grew with interest since then and she was able to finalize any loose debt they had with the remainder of it after the funeral.

I need to check on that, my grandfather is a Vietnam and Korean War vet. Military sure has been good to them over the years.

My parents have one( used one on my Mom) and I have one. I think they are from Brown. But to use the policy the funeral home charged us 600 dollars because a funeral homes filed a lawsuit saying they don’t cover the cost of funerals. We couldn’t use the one for digging the hole and covering it up, tho. I know it paid for a low end casket which is all my mom wanted

When my stepfather passed he had one that cover everything but we could only use a specific brand casket that was fine with us. My 88 year old mother has several smaller policies that will only cover about half. All of their policies were purchased back in the 50s or early 60s for a fraction of today's cost.

I can't even remember the last time I went to a wedding at an actual church. Everyone feels they have to rent a wedding venue. $25k wedding or married at the courthouse is exactly the same.

$25,000 isn’t even expensive for a wedding in 2024. My son got married in May. $20k (Auburn). I got remarried in Dec. $4k Huntsville. I had about 50 more people. It is nuts.
