Alpaca is wool. Just from a different animal. It's less coarse / abrasive and at least as warm and has the same wicking ability as normal wool. If you want to get crazy get baby alpaca wool. It's a whole nother level.

Alpaca is better than sheep wool , Bison wool is better than both of those.

I have found that the combo my feet like is....merino socks with alpaca boot insoles. I also spray my feet with scent free antiperspirant
