So my wife took her car to a local service center here in Dothan just to get an oil change and rotation. Well after the job was done they told her that her rear brakes were shot and it was metal on metal (had the rear brakes replaced 3 years ago) with average mileage in the last 3 years. Then wanted to charge her $425 for brakes and rotors. I can get premium pads and rotors for less than they wanted to charge her for just pads. I told her a hard pass. I will say, I haven’t look at the brakes. The brakes may need to be replaced but I highly doubt they’re in the condition of what they say and shouldn’t cost nearly that amount. The rear pads shouldn’t cost $190 for parts. Not including the rotors.

If they are metal on metal you would be able to hear them. Those quick oil places are always trying to make an extra buck.

There is a reason those places exist and it for convenience and to make money. They change oil and rotate tires cheaper than home grown places but make up for it on selling other products. Especially to the women folks. We as men just have to teach them not to fall for it and bring it back home to be taken care of. That is unless you don’t want to fool with it.

I had a dealer try and sell pads and rotors to my 23 yr old daugther to the tune of $900. She told them no thanks, my dad does all my mechanical work. lol. I put pads all the way around for $130. Rotors were not needed.

If it will save me $250 and cost 1.5 hours of my time..I’ll do it myself. I’m not a mechanic and never claimed to be but I can do the basics. A basic brake job is in my wheel house.

Why coast up to a red light or stop sign when you can hammer down and slap the brakes at the last second

They wanted $100 for oil and filter on my GF's daughters car. I told her I could buy low profile ramps, high end oil and filter and save her $20 and even more from then on using the $45 ramps over and over.

The Express Oil around here is throwing a synthetic oil upcharge on your bill if you get synthetic.... and then they are turning around and telling you it doesn't last any longer than the cheapo regular oil. Same oil change interval.
Be advised - if you are that guy.... you are getting taken to the cleaners.
Everything else they say you need tell the NO. Also be aware that if you take your vehicle to the dealer there is a different between "Dealer Scheduled Maintenance" and what that book you've hopefully still got in your glove compartment says. Go by the book, NOT what they dealer says they are ripping you off too.
No government employees were harmed in the making of this mess.

Front and rear you are up to the $900 I got quoted. No thanks.

Road mart on the circle across from Lowe’s. The only thing I ever let roadmart do is change my oil and rotate tires. That’s the last time I’ll go back. A synthetic oil change and tire rotation was $190. They’ve went up drastically from what I remember. Used to get a synthetic oil change for $79. I use someone else in town for the more in depth stuff.

Being a complete mechanical goober I did explain to a widow lady's granddaughter that Motorcraft fl1a filter and 10w30 oil was what was needed for the 1997 Fordf150 in the garage. She whipped out her smartphone put on a pair of gloves and changed oil just as fast as you goobers could've. 23 years old and asks "Why do they charge $54.72 for that.?" Hope springs eternal!

If she actually needs rear pads and rotors, the price doesn't seem excessively high, of course that depends on what kind of vehicle. I just checked Oreilly's and if I were to put rear rotors and pads on my truck, I'd spend roughly $300, so $425 in parts (with the expected markup) and labor doesn't seem too far out of normal.
Now, if they're telling her she needed them when she didn't, that's a whole 'nother issue and absolutely worth a rant.
