Granny’s Apron


I do not think most kids today know what an apron is. The principle use of Mom's or Grandma's apron was to protect the dress underneath because she only had a few. It was also because it was easier to wash aprons than dresses and aprons used less material. But along with that, it served as a potholder for removing hot pans from the oven.

It was wonderful for drying children's tears, and time to time on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears. From the chicken coop, the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven. Now you will really be telling your age if you know what a warming oven on a wood burning stove was.

When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids..
And when the weather was cold, she wrapped it around her arms.
Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove. Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron.
From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables. After the peas had been shelled, it carried out the hulls.

In the fall, the apron was used to bring in apples and pears that had fallen from the trees. When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds.

When dinner was ready, she walked out onto the porch, waved her apron, and the men folk knew it was time to come in from the fields to dinner.
It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace that 'old-time apron' that served so many purposes.

Mom's and Grandma's used to set hot baked apple pies on the window sill to cool. Now their granddaughters set theirs on the window sill to thaw out.

Women now would go crazy now trying to figure out how many germs were on that apron.

Thanks forthe post. The wife and I were talking last night about how fortunate we are that our daughters are old-fashioned. Our youngest just added a shelf to her kitchen that holds framed, hand-written, recipes from her grandmothers and one great-grandmother. And she is raising her children to do the same. She and her 5 yo daughter and 3 yo son all have aprons hanging in the kitchen. We are blessed.

That nails both of my grandmothers. I was fortunate to have them. Thank You.

My wife wears her granny’s apron when she cooks. She’s 35. I couldn’t have been any more blessed with an old fashioned bible thumpin bean cookin wife.OP your post takes me back to my great Aunts. They lived to be close to 100. They had an apron for cookin, cleanin, yard work etc… they dipped snuff and brushed their teeth with a black gum limb up until they died.

My daughter has my mothers (one of them any way). My grandmother always had something in the pocket for a grandchild.

Awesome post. Yes both grandmothers wore them and did everything in this post. My mom 86 wears one today.it hangs on the door stop entering the pantry. Home made ones at that. Thanks for bringing good memories back.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane. My own grandma was rarely without an apron on, and most times if she was outside she also had a bonnet on. That's something rarer than hens teeth these days.

I grew up with a silver spoon and didnt get to experience real life like the OP mentioned. My new wife and step daughters wear aprons. I wear one when I weld and do woodworking. I got kickback on a 3hp table saw once........once.

Knew an elderly lady who willed her apron to a friend
The front part of the apron had been added over by 5 different pieces of fabric
One day the friend noticed what looked like a pocket but it had been slightly sewn up
She pulled it open ever so gently and noticed some money inside
She got that tool (name I can’t remember) to cut the thread so she could open it up
When she got it open she saw that the whole front had been lined with $100 bills
She took the front layer off and noticed the same pocket on each layer
She called the woman’s daughter to come over asap to show her and give her that money back
5 layers of side to side $100 bills cover each layer
The daughter told her that her momma wanted her to have it and that why she was so specific about who got her apron and nothing else
Can’t remember exactly how much but was a fair amount of money

My wife and I were going through some boxes a while back and she found her grandmother's well worn apron. It's hanging in our pantry now so she can see it and think of her every day.

My grandparents practically raised me and my brother and I well remember Mamaw's apron and a big old tin pan that went to the garden with her when it was time to pick it. Wouldn't trade those memories for any amount of money..

Amen, Brother. Hold on to those memories.
