I have a question. I have (3) 3 phase motors. All rated at 2hp. 1750 RPM. Frame size are all very close to the same. They are as follows

Enco/Import - 15/16
GE motor (old) - 7/8
Baldor 5/8

My question, are these motor really the same? I would think the larger the shaft the "better" the motor.

i would think that if the shaft size (and shaft material) were sufficient for the torsion applied by the torque of the motor with a safety factor, then anything over that size would be unnecessary weight.

It based on duty cycle and use. Think 3hp fan vs 3hp saw. Much different duty cycle…

if a pulley/sheave is going on the shaft. It doesn't really make any difference. Just make sure you can accommodate for the different FLA especially if the motor starter requires heaters (the circuit protection kind)

yeah shaft sizes do vary as well as frames. some of the foreign motors exaggerate their horsepower greatly and they are usually the ones with the small shafts. they do sell sleeves or different size taper locks to match a different shaft to a pulley.

They do sell sleeves. I have several metal lathes and can spin one up easy enough.

Funny it is the lightest by 10 pounds or so. The other two motors are ~40 pounds.

The shafts seem like a large diameter for such low HP. We had a lot of Baldor 3phase motors where I used to work . I like Baldor also. I've cut key seats, cut sleeves and couplings, broached pullys and couplings for a bunch of em.

"Why do you ask"?

US Motor makes a great product. We rep them and they keep a huge stock in Memphis.
