Zeiss HD5 3-15x42
Ive never like the smaller objective scopes but this one is pretty nice. It’s Mounted on the little kimber in the other thread. They discontinued this scope but I don’t understand why. Anyone ever have one?

I think the biggest reason they were discontinued is shortly after they came out the trend of 30mm scopes picked up steam and the 1in tube models became “inferior” over night if you listened to the advertising. Some people complain of a tunneling effect with the HD5 but I think it’s just a matter of getting the eye relief set just right because of the 5X adjustment range

My brother and I have 3 of these. Great glass. The ones we have are 1" tubes and the market has moved toward 30 mm tubes. The 30 mm tubes allows for better magnification ratio (from 5X to 6X and 8X) and a little better light gathering ability. I'd rate the Zeiss HD5 better than a Vortex Viper, superior to the Nikon Monarch, and about the same level as Leopold VX-5HD and Steiner G3. The ones we have have the Z600 reticle, which is great for 308, 270, 30-06, 7-08, and 6.5CM. You will need the Z800 reticle for the magnums.

Put that set up on the market you know you want to I honestly want to make myself like it. Other than the issues I listed in the other thread, I have 5 rifles in 7-08 and I can’t tote but 1 at a time.

I've had a few of the HD5 scopes and still have a couple. The glass is very good crisp and excellent light transmission.
The tunneling effect is there, but it's not terrible and no a bad as some other scopes I've seen. Tunnel effect is one thing I really don't like, and I wouldn't have bought these scopes if it was bad.
One downside to the tunneling effect is reduced image size transmitted to your eye. The image at 10X through a HD5 will appear smaller than it would if looking through a Swarovski Z5 at 10X.

The tunneling affect is why I sold my 56 mm meostar r1. I’d like an r2 because the focal plane is different with no tunneling. I have a few other Zeiss scopes with no complaint

Is the tunnel effect where the outside edges seem a little blurry compared to the center? No. Tunnel effect is where you have a large black ring around the image being transmitted to your eye. It makes the image appear to be deep inside the scope instead of at the ocular lens in front your eye. The Meopta scope referenced above by EHH is very bad tunnel vision. The current V6 Zeiss scopes have bad tunnel vision IMO. When they first came out with that line a few years ago I looked through one and said "no thanks". The V4 Zeiss scopes do not have this tunnel effect.
