I have several 55gal feed drums that I thought about turning into feeders I could hang up in the woods. We have a considerable hog population so I was thinking about making them into gravity feeders. I wondered if they would swing too bad with deer nosing in them. Never used a gravity feeder before. It would be great to not have to worry about batteries and wires on a solar panel getting chewed up. I assume the feed lasts a decent while as well?

I did the same thing several years ago. Yes it swings but they get used to it.
Would walk over a naked woman to get to a gobblin turkey!

Moultrie makes a spinner that takes 2 AAs and will last all season.

If a raccoon can possibly gain access to it, they will drain it. I assume if it’s high enough off ground, far from a tree trunk, they couldn’t get to the opening. But I’d like to hear from someone who’s actually watched one with a camera, I don’t underestimate anything to do with a raccoon and corn

But I’d like to hear from someone who’s actually watched one with a camera, I don’t underestimate anything to do with a raccoon and corn I think my best plan is chain between two trees and winch cable on pulleys to raise and lower it

Iast year i was seeing 25+ deer in that field in the evenings regularly. There would be 5-6 deer around that feeder about all night. However, having that feed there along with a pretty big foodplot with continuous feed got the deer numbers up pretty quick. Took 3-4 years to go from 5-6 deer most evenings, none some evenings to 25-30deer pretty regular. If none show up, theyll be there 15min after dark. Continuous feed turned that field into where the deer go every night

You can put a spinner on it if the gravity dont work out. I prefer gravity myself, i just cant afford it any more

If the coons can't climb on it and get to the corn it will last a while but that's the hard part, getting it where coons can't but deer can. I have a hanging 6 gallon galvenized bucket/trash can that doesn't allow them a footing. they can climb all over the top but fall off trying to get to the spinner on bottom as it's smooth sided and the feeder motor is tucked in under the bottom with no exposed edge for a footing. I'm actually kinda surprised at how well it keeps the coons out of the corn and was quite honestly by accident. Maybe a feed drum offers the same predicament for the coons as long as they can't reach it from the ground??

They will eat it heavily I had a frame on a tree with a winch cable on the post that I used to raise and lower it. Bolts pulled out cause they weren’t long enough eventually. Squirrels were a pain in the ass coons not so much since my squirrel dogs checked it multiple times a night for them.
