I am considering doing an Iowa Public land bow hunt in the fall of next year. I've started the researching process of zones and deer densities, etc. Wanted to reach out to you guys to see if any of you have been there, done that and have advice regarding the do's and don'ts. Obviously, I'm not asking for anyone's honey hole, but any information will be greatly appreciated. My 12-year-old son drew a tag this year, so we are headed there in December to hunt private land during their second gun season. I hope to get some public land advice from the farmer while we are there, but any additional tips would be great. Thanks!

Note: I will have 3 preference points as of next year so drawing a tag is not a sure thing.

What area are y’all going in to gun hunt? Be sure to wear plenty of orange. They sling some lead out there at everything. I had good luck hunting Iowa during the bow and muzzleloader seasons on public ground. I hunted mostly central Iowa where I lived.

Zone 7. It's a private farm so I'm hoping that we won't run into many other hunters. I don't have much interest in the gun hunt, that's why I'm trying to get versed on the public land rut hunts and where to concentrate my efforts.

What I looked for were places other folks wouldn’t go. I set up between their feeding and bedding. Vocal calls and rattling actually works out there. Be sure to add some buck scent if you put out any estrus. I hunted the rut and man it’s like you see on tv. Also, don’t be discouraged by the wind. Those deer are use to it.
