I replaced my upstairs 1.5 ton with a 2.0 ton Carrier two years ago, $5600. That was the split system and furnace.
Character is not developed in moments of temptation and trial. That is when it is intended to be used.

^^^^$10-12K? That's an utterly ridiculous number for a 1.5 ton unit replacement. Duct work and line sets are already in place $5-7K is where you should be

Just to be transparent. Here is what they are quoting: Remove/dispose of old unit. Recover refrigerant and recycle. Chemicaly flush lines. Fabricate metal return box. Connect to existing main supply and ducting. Clean drain line and insulate. New drain pan and overflow switches. Install a light in attic ( there is not one near this unit). Deck with plywood ( there is none except under the unit itself). Pressurized with nitrogen for leak check. Charge new system. Set new thermal.
That all might be standard stuff I have no idea. Option one is unit :AMST24BU14 + DZ4SEA1810. 14.3 SEER2 Option two : DZ6VSA1810 + DV24FECB14. 17.5 SEER2

Not even remotely close to an apples to apples comparison. The Daikin Fit is top quality inverter piece of equipment with the best warranties on the market. We install ton of them (labeled Amana S) any reputable contractor is going to be in the 10-12 range for that piece of equipment.

Ok had two Daiken options quoted. One is the traditional split system the other is a Daiken Fit mini split. New pan, etc.. 10-12k. The Daiken fit would have an air handler in the attic ( where the current one is ) and use the existing duct work and lines. I guess that is different than the other version of a mini split, which doesn’t have the air handler. I have no idea if my terminology is correct.
So 10-12k is the number.. Yea the Daikin fit is similar in style to a mini split condenser but does not match up to mini split wall mounts. Like a mini split condenser it is a slim style side discharge system that requires minimum clearances. It runs with an inverter compressor, variable speed outdoor fan, electronic expansion valves and an upgraded variable speed air handler. Truly where the industry will be in just a matter of time. The thermostat is a communicating thermostat that checks and monitors the entire system while running and will operate at minimum speeds of 20% up to 100% in small increments vs just sending a call to heat or cool at 100%. The fit is the same exact thing as the Amana S that we install. The contractor is in a normal range for the piece of equipment and scope of work regardless of what all the arm chair Hvac business owners are saying about the pricing they’ve received in the past or recently. A reputable company has to charge that for that piece of equipment. The warranty is also excellent in the system with a lifetime unit replacement warranty if the compressor fails.

You can buy a Gree flex 1.5Ton for about $26-2700 after tax. Basically same unit. I’d imagine the daikin is in the $4kish range, but I haven’t purchased one.

Why would you look at the most expensive replacement option(split) when you are replacing a standard Trane model? That is what made me say the price is way too high. And pretty sure the verbiage on what they are doing is pretty standard on a replacement except for the light installation. I put in a 3 or 3.5 ton can't remember for sure Carrier heat pump w/ gas backup heat for less than what you got quoted on that unit.

Y’all remember all the prices went up drastically in January due to new regs. Prices up about 25% (all you Biden voters can thank Joe for 'saving the planet"). Travis, like halb said above, why not just go back with a 1.5 ton replacement unit instead of taking the most expensive route. The Daikin is a very expensive option and "probably" not needed for this application based on what he is replacing. I promise you, he can find someone to replace his old Trane with a new 1.5 ton, using the existing ductwork and line sets for $5-7K. Hardware for a 1.5 ton and new air handler is going to run $2300 - $4500 depending on the seer rating and brand. Figure a couple or three grand for mark-up and install labor. If it's more than that, I need to tell my hvac subs that they need to pack up and head up that way, work up there for a couple years and retire. They are running duct today for me on two houses for a 4 ton and a 5 ton. I'm a GC and buy 12-15 units a year. I'm no hvac tech or expert by any means but I know what it costs to do certain things and know enough to spot when someone is being upsold on something they probably dont need. The ROI or the payback/savings on that 10-12K Daikin versus a standard 1.5 ton, in energy savings/efficiency (Daikin will probably be 30% more efficient) is going to be somewhere around 30 yrs.

We are still looking at options. We had a quote a few months ago for a Goodman by a different company and it was right at 9k so the 10k & 12k didn’t sound outrageous. In all honesty I am not opposed to buying good equipment and paying for a quality installation. I just don’t want to get fleeced. I have done the jack leg AC install on a previous house and it really didnt turn out very well. This one is still running so not an immediate problem. Lots of info here.

Goodman has ax10 year warranty !! The Daikin Fit and Amana S have a lifetime warranty on the condensing unit. People can say what they want right now, but the Goodman family (Goodman, Daikin and Amana) lead the pack in warranty offering.

Hey jbatey are the all aluminum coils repairable like the copper ones. I here you can still braze/solder them? What's your experience?

We replaced our main unit which was a trane with a Goodman. The compressor on the Goodman failed at year 5. The compressor is covered but not the labor, removing and replacing the refrigerant, which comes at a cost, and some other miscellaneous charges. It’s still not cheap to do that. I do like the Goodman, it is quieter than the trane was, and our utility bill went down. So it must be more efficient.

(Knock on Wood) I haven’t had to deal with that any, but it’s doable. Our distributors sell kits specifically for repairing aluminum coils. For what its worth, I prefer the new aluminum coils 10 to 1 over the more recent standard copper/aluminum/steel coils that are prone to rust.

It’s really remarkable compared to what most have dealt with leading up to the install of these systems.
