I have cut spurs off with sazalls, hack saws, dremel tools and probably other ways. PCP, I saw in a thread you casually mentioned you used a big set of pruning shears to cut yours off. So this morning, I figured as I waited for it to dry enough to go out, I would cut this years off and thought about your hint. The pruning shears is the best way by far to cut them off. Thanks for the inadvertent help!!!

Glad it worked out for you. It only takes a few minutes a year to fix them up that way, preserving both the spurs and beards. Why I wanna save them is another question, and I don't really know the answer.

PCP, until 15 years or so ago, I would only keep them about a season then when the new season started they would get thrown away usually. My daughter got me to saving them. She saw a display at someone’s home and said Dad, u need to display yours, so we did. Haha. It’ll be something else she can throw away when I go to be with the Lord. I’ve enjoyed having them up tho. I display them by sub species.

It only took 30 minutes or so this morning to do those 4 Bama Birds and the 2 Texas Birds. I made this for a young lady I hunted with from one of her birds. I kinda liked it as well. My major professor was Dan Speake (Turkey researcher). I made one of those in about 1994 for him with a bird he shot. Only 1 3/4" spurs I have ever seen! Wish I had taken a pic!

I've had bones break around the spurs using pruning shears in the past. Best and quickest way I've found to do it is the little bandsaw in my shop. You can zip 20-30 sets in about 5 minutes with that thing.

Fine tooth blade hacksaw with the feet/leg in a vice is how I do all mine. Makes short work of them and the cut is clean!

Bandsaw the first cut below the spur to cut off the foot portion. Then use a wire wheel on a grinder to clean off the bone and then make the top cut on a bandsaw. You can do both feet in five minutes once you figure out the wire wheel work.

I'm sure a bandsaw would be the best, but I don't have one.
I suspect that the type of pruning shears that are like big scissors could mess one up, but I have a set of the type where only the top blade does the cutting and the bottom just has a smooth piece of metal. I think I've cut around 300 spurs off with this one without ever damaging one.

I have also broke some in the past with pruning shears. I have used a side grinder with a cut off wheel the last 4-5 years.

I currently only have 2 empty shells to show for my efforts over the past 3 years, but plenty of damn good memories. I put them on the pull chain to the ceiling fan in my office to remind me of my mistakes. SJ22, are the shells with a little bit of the hull still attached for birds that had multiple beards?
