Trail cam pictures have me thinking. What are the chances of young poults survival if mama is spooked away from them? I mean like flying to the next ridge and returning an hour later. I’ve seen multiple poults that likely hatched while the season was still open. I hate the thought of spooking hens off of young poults and our state thinking it’s a good time to be hunting still.

I know there have been concerns by some biologists that hunters could cause he s to abandon the nest by spooking them off. I read about the guy at LSU planning a study on it, but never heard any results. I have spooked them off with a tractor and had them never come back, so I think it's possible.
I don't think there is much chance of hens abandoning poults. That's just based on my experience with them, and I could be wrong. I've never seen a hen leave them very long, even if she is grave danger herself.
All the labor of man is for his mouth, and yet the appetite is not filled.

I've never seen a hen abandon her poults. I've seen them do the limp wing thing to lure you away from the poults. Their motherly instincts are so strong. I believe if they were separated, the hen would find them asap

I believe if they were separated, the hen would find them asap I seen one run slap over a 9lbs Chihuahua one time doing that . Dog look at me and look at me with a WTF was that . I laughed so hard I lost my breath. We walk up on the hen , she squated down babies ran under her . Dog didn't see her we got close and she just plowed him over dragging her wings and run off . babies went in ever direction

I don't think it would take her very long to either get them over to her or get herself back to them. But that is just my opinion based on very little evidence.

I walk/drive upon them from time to time at work. Simple fact - it creates an upset condition - and that is obviously a negative situation - which could easily produce a negative result.
