I hunted that place 30 years ago. Loved it. Lots of memories in those woods. I have heard it wasn’t worth the time as of recent years

The Auburn University club fishing record bag was caught on Yates one Fall by Jordan Lee. 26 or 27 lbs I heard. It's a great lake to fish. When I hunt from my boat, I usually end up fishing half the day or more, if they are biting.

Use to turkey hunt it when I went to Auburn a few years back. Saw a few deer on the powerlines in the morning, saw one turkey in the dozen or so times I went hunting there over a couple years. Not real desirable topography or hunting. Pretty place in the right areas though.

So would you hunt Yates or Coon Creek if you had to choose? Don't care about the roads. I'll be coming by boat. There's a lot better public land hunting than Yates in other places.... Agreed, but my buddy has a house on Martin less than 20 mins down the road from there. Makes it easy. I had the same idea and i put a lot of time and effort into hunting yates by boat thinking i would have a huge advantage. Sign/deer are very scattered and i finally got brave enough to try some gun hunts, i was as far from a paved road as humanly possible without another boat anywhere and had someone rattle off a shot within 200 yds from me. No idea how they got in there but the next day i found sxs tracks so i didnt think you could use those but maybe you can for recovery. It has a great old road system for walking around and i enjoyed exploring some cool terrain but i believe i have officially abandoned that place other than early bow season i have some easy to get to spots where i usually at least bump some deer going in/out. To be honest i think the better hunting is in the areas that a boat does not give you an advantage but then you are obviously battling crowds and that was the main thing i was hoping to avoid. i wasn't looking for great hunting but just somewhere i could maybe see some deer and be left alone. This year during bow season i was again as far from paved roads as humanly possible and heard all kinds of noise and 3 teenagers walking a pitbull at 10 am was the source of the noise. Coon creek is probably a lot less pressure being bow hunt only and it has a lot more diversity/edge for such a small property. That is where i would go and going by boat will allow you to avoid their very sketchy boat ramp/parking area. On yates turkeys seem to be worse, i called in more hunters than turkeys and was hunting during week from boat. They never gobble on roost and when you do fire one up at 9:30 on a tuesday, some idiot messes it up for you within 10 min.
