So I have this model 19-4 with a 4 inch barrel. I’ve thought about putting a scope on it just to see what kind of groups I can get. I’m not a great pistol shooter but, assuming I can do my part, what kind of groups could I expect with this setup at say 50 yds. I would like to take this pistol hunting next season if I could see some sort of reasonable accuracy.

I don’t even have a scope for it yet. I’ll have to do some research on that. Just wondering if close range hunting would even be practical with this short of a barrel.

Not to sound like a guru but sure if you can get a good view of the vitals the 357 will work. No it won't hammer of Thor like a 454 casull but just find what your Smith likes I'd recommend at least 140 grains of bullet.

Thanks for the comments. No I understand it’s not a 300 win mag and wouldn’t be used as such. But from what I read, it should sling a 158 jsp at 1100-1200 fps at 40-50 yds. If I got a scope or red dot and could consistently put them where I wanted them at that distance, I may consider taking it out. It would mostly be a range toy plinking steel plates.

I can keep all 6 on a 4 inch plate at 30 yards with irons, and do the same at 50-60 with a simple dot sight. Get you a decent tripod if you aren't steady, and practice a bit. Shooting single action lowers the trigger pull and makes it a bit easier.

a four inch GUN is as accurate as any length. A longer bbled gun may be EASIER to shoot accurately. A scoped gun negates the advantage of longer sight radius for better accuracy.
MY EXPERIENCE only, I don't think the 357 is an adequate deer gun. I have shot two deer with a 357mag/158grJHP. One of them at 15 yards and I saw the impact in the crease, 1/3 way up...never recovered, no blood trail. I've killed several with a 41mag and it does very good. I shot a 5 shot 6" group in the bull with that gun. Six inch bbl, iron sights.
I've spent most of the money I've made in my lifetime on hunting and fishing. The rest I just wasted.....
