The firing thread got me thinking about workplace injury. Why would a boss know he's got to spend to fix a problem piece of equipment and jank and go it? Saw a picker put his harness on and get 5 feet off ground and arm fail didn't hurt him just scared. Equipment pulled out of service and "looked over" two days later same thing this time though a maintenance supervisor actually did the right thing and new picker replaced old one because it was unfixable. Then upper management complains about having to replace equipment. Bad management is more damaging to companies than bad workers.

Seen it happen many times. I've seen bad management crush good workers, and then the management wonders why those good workers leave.

If it's unfixable it's unfixable. Usually something that's big enough to matter would be capitalized anyway, so when I say that to management they glaze over because it won't hit their OPEX/conversion cost (at least not on the repair ledger account). They don't care about depreciation as much as they do indirect spend on Ops supplies and maintenance work orders.

As far as dealing with a bad actor/repeat offender equipment, it's a matter of weighing the replacement cost (equipment + downtime to install) vs the cost of the downtime associated with the ongoing frequent repairs, cost of those repairs, and the margins/demand on what that equipment supports. Sold out production lines don't have much trouble getting what they need. It's the ones with lower utilization that we keep repairing.

For me, if it pays out in less than a year, I'm signing for it. Two years, probably still signing. Three years, you better have some really sound/conservative assumptions to allow for room for error. Anything beyond that we generally prioritize out of our list due to capital constraints.

To add, in my career, I'm batting 1000 on safety/HSE related projects. I've never turned one down, and won't.

Most times upper management is being penny smart and dollar stupid with those type of decisions. Worked in municipal job for to long seen it happen to many times. Always seems come back and not them in the butt.

Employees don’t leave jobs, they leave managers.
I have zero tolerance for leadership or employees that overlook safety. Being involved with our HSE program, I have to say that we have the best leadership and our current team takes their own safety very seriously. It’s a shame that mandates are about to wreck it all.

in my experience the bosses nowadays are too concerned with safety. they get so ridiculous about it that they make it more dangerous. but yeah there are some places where that aint the case.

Many companies just want to do a CYA for OSHA. Their factories are safe on paper.

"Why do you ask"?

Too many people spend money they don't have , on things they don't need, to impress people they don't know.

Safety is more important than dollars. Negligence will cost you more than fixing something.

I know everybody here hates Union labor and I’m not crazy about it, but I’ve talked to 2 people high up in the transportation industry that HATE unions. Both of them said that without a union America would have multiple railroad derailments and multiple hazardous waste spills every day within the trucking industry.

Top tier management would never let it be reported either. If an 18 wheeler loaded with toxic chemicals that cause childhood cancer spilled into a city’s water supply they would just get the next truck on the road to protect profits.

When I worked during the construction phase of the plastics plant in Burkville if there was a gas leak inside a building it was reported as contained…even if it wasn’t.

Safety in my shop is top priority, and matters before anything else. I have a couple of my best employees that are very confident in their abilities, and are subject to try some cowboy crap. I tell them every morning lets work safe and no cowboy stuff. Got a garage door company coming to repair an automatic bay door, because one cable is loose, still works but I locked it so they can’t use it, I also had the electrician unwire the motor, because the cowboys will try and use it.

I was a corporate account rep for years. The last 3 of those were spent in a quasi compliance role. Over the years I had become pretty proficient in OSHA1910.179 and ANSIB30 related Crane regs. In doing so we developed a Crane Compliance GAP analysis. I’ve been in most Nucor, IP, Westrock, and ALCOA mill in North America. Not to mention Power Plants in multiple countries. Most of these companies did a pretty good job. There were exceptions though.

A steel mill in Indiana was the worst. I was called in following a Crane related fatality. A technician was on the bridge performing a PM. A missing coupling guard snagged his harness. I spent two days in the plant and climbing on every Crane. Every single coupling guard was missing. The company removed them to reduce PM time and inspection time on the couplings. They were still adamant they had done no wrong even after the death. It was the only time in my career I called a customer an idiot.
