This thread is a statement of society not just hunting clubs, to ask the question of the OP is valid I guess. You can see the trend here most Presidents/Lease Holders are doing what it takes to make the club what it should be while others don't appreciate it nor do their part. It's kind of the world today This! Also, if you have a lease holder, it’s not a club. It is a lease with only one name on it. If run properly, that person is just letting you pay a portion of their lease.
Hunting brings out the worst in people.

10% of the people do 90% of the work and it's usually the ones that have the lease. I know me and my hunting bud that have the lease spend twice as much money as any other member
10 years ago when the economy sucked I paid 5 memberships in June and got half my money back in November

I don't want to make money off the lease. But I do want to have a club where all the members can be successful. I think I have a good group of guys in the club now who get the direction I have been going, even when I wasn't the Pres. We soil tested, limed, and got a biologist out there to look at the property. We have implemented some of her suggestions. We decided as a board not to allow baiting green fields, and whats been interesting is, I think we have seen more deer on green fields. Could be the lime, or it could be people are staying off them.
I will not be successful as a pres or lease holder if I am the only person who sees or kills a deer. I have new guys that have seen alot of deer this season, which is good. My first year we had people who didn't see any. I think I killed 2 my first year, 5 last year (2 kiddo kills) and this year 4 so far (3 kiddo kills). Most of the guys like to see the kids shoot them, which is why I have passed on so many opportunities to shoot a doe.
But I also wouldn't cut anyone slack if they complained about how many I see. I do all the tractor work, and when you are riding arounf on a tractor, you get to see alot you miss zipping by on an ATV or truck. And I go and back track deer I see to find out where they went. And since I have passed so many, I have gotten to observe them and learn. Since I have done almost all the planting, I have learned what the deer like out there too, and have spent a ton of my personal money planting those forages.
I have also done some analysis, and based upon the data I can find about Shelby county, think we need to fix our low density problem before shooting a bunch of doe's. So I asked the Timber Co if we could shoot 6 to 8 spikes to help rebalance, and showed that my buck to doe ratio is really skewed more for bucks than doe's. I want more doe's and less bucks, because I figure I can pull a buck off a neighboring piece of property. I don't think I can have a trophy club without a high fence. And only about 5 or 6 members. I just don't have the acreage.
For the 2022-23 season, I think we might need a doe limit, once we hit it, no more can be shot. And it will probably be low. If you could see my spread sheet, its really easy to see if you kill a bunch of doe's you will end up with a property with bucks and very few doe's. Doesn't matter what the denisity it. The only thing denisity helps is it allows you to kill a greater number of doe's.
I guess no one thinks about that when they talk about managing a property. The biologist wanted us to kill 15 doe's this year. If we did that, and did it again next year, I would have 4 doe's on the property, assuming a 1 to 1 ratio, all doe's have twins one of each sex, and no predation, and killing 6 bucks. THats with a deer density of 30 per square mile. Shelby is 30 to 60. I certainly don't believe I have 60.
I can't sustain a club with 4 doe's.

I’ve been in a club like that and ended up holding a position FOR A WHILE where I benefited from the free dues. In my experience and opinion it’s not a matter of IF someone gets screwed, but WHEN and how bad.
If voting made any difference, they wouldn’t let us do it.-Mark Twain

You're putting a little too much thought in to this...... If you want to improve your hunting. Lay off the trigger. Don't have a single membership (you) killing 5 deer a year on a low density property. Don't start shooting spikes just to shoot something. Plant every inch you can. Keep member numbers as low as possible. Then sit back and wait about 3 years. Your quality of hunting will be drastically improved. If you and your members aren't willing to do those things, then just have fun and don't stress about it. Doing "In between" is pretty fruitless, until you build your baseline herd.

I hold the lease on our club and run the club. I make the rules but I do try and listen to the members and take into consideration their thoughts and desires but at the end of the day, I have the final say. As far as benefits, I do more work at the club than anyone, and I pay the same thing that everyone else pays, I will assess members fees if extra money is needed but for the most part, if it is under a $1000 a year, I just kick it in the club funds. There is nothing glamorous about running a club and there certainlly isn't any financial windfall associated with it.

Well see now you have gotten to the heart of my post. I have a little over 1000 acres, and 19 members. Not my choice. One of the guys who was running things thinks we need to make it mandatory you can't kill a buck unless you kill a doe first. And the limits are insane. For instance, between me and my 2 sons, we could kill 9 doe's and 5 bucks. If I had a wife, add 3 more bucks and 3 more doe's. The only one doing math is me. There is no way to rebalance my deer herd without killing more bucks than doe's. I bet its way out of kilter already, because of the liberal doe limit. Perfect example. When you go by a cow pasture, do you see a 1 to 1 ratio of bulls to cows? And if you don't make eunichs out of the new male calves, what's going to happen? No one wants to eat the bull.

I feel for you. We haven’t been killing many does, less than 12 the last 3 years in just over 1600 acres and we still don’t have many deer. Not sure what happened unless the neighboring clubs are blasting them.
Like Atoler said , trigger restraint is the only thing a club can do to get deer numbers up.
When we did the QDMA thing in the early 2000s and killed over 300 does a year for 2 years, on about 9k acres there was hardly a deer on the place for 4 years, and it wasn’t fantastic in years 6 to 8.
I don’t care what the biologist say , I think some of the low density areas are past the point of return. I think the only thing that might get numbers back up would be to shut down doe harvest completely for 3 to 5 seasons in entire counties. Even then, I don’t know if the numbers would rebound.

I looked at Game Check and right now for shelby county its running 1 buck for ever 2 doe's killed. Doesn't that seem odd considering there is a 3 buck limit but a daily doe limit?
I think we need to take out some spikes. I have 1000 acres basically. 24 green fields, none of which are bigger than half an acrea, and maybe 8 to 10 acre's planted. Fields have been tested and limed. They aren't being hammered. Well some of the smaller ones that have whitetail clover are. But the rest, nope.
The QDMA argument is they may grow to sport some nice antlers, but shouldn't I already have some nice antlers on the property? What would it matter if I killed a nice rack buck or a spike. All you are really talking about there is what, the timing of when you can kill the buck with the nice antlers?
I am sorry, I am a numbers guy, and I just don't see how you have a property where you kill 3 times the number of doe's to bucks, when just the law of averages would dictate each surviving doe would have either one or two deer and the split between buck and doe fawns would be roughly equal. Then you have a bunch of dumb knot head bucks running around that no one shoots. They shoot more doe's. Eventually you wind up with a whole lot of bucks and not many doe's.
I get why they want a 1 to 1 ratio. It's so the bucks have to work to find a doe. But you probably won't see many bucks until the rut. So what's the point? You basically spend all this money and hunt for 3 weeks and call it quits? Just seems counter productive.

Lockjaw, the first thing you need to do is drop your membership to about 7 -8 members. Y’all need to spend about 3 years with very limited harvest and see how that works. Killing spikes isn’t the answer either.

Based on just that fact, most likely, you dont have a density problem, you've got a hunting pressure problem and the deer are just not using your property much, especially if your neighbors don't hunt as much as you do. I agree with 338, 100%. Cut the membership numbers by 60-75% and lay off the trigger for 2-3 years and see how things are looking. I'll bet that you would be surprised. If you've got 20 people plus guest and family members using that place 7 days a week, the deer dont ever get a break and it wont matter how much or what you plant. You've got to make the place a spot where deer feel safe, have what they need (food, cover, bedding, water) and want to be, and if every deer using the property gets a nose full of human scent everywhere they go, every day, its not the way to do it.

That’s awful high hunter to acres ratio. Lockjaw I’d try to knock that down to less than half that. The pressure alone is likely having a negative impact on what y’all see and have the opportunity to shoot.

With that many people hunting 1000 acres you are pissing in the wind, no offense intended. 19 members plus family is way too many. We have 800 acres and five members, only 3 of the members have hunted this season. I'm going to add a member when I find the unicorn I'm looking for. Might have found that guy on here if it works out. Y'all are going to cut your membership at least in half and fork out more money per member. That's your only option if you want to improve the quality of your lease

That's your only option if you want to improve the quality of your lease Yeah once I heard 19 members on a thousand acres I wouldn't walk I'd run away Yep. What are the dues, $500/year? $75 😂😂😂
We will burn that bridge when we get there

Definitely your problem. I won’t hunt on a place with 100 acres per member. We have 200 acres that’s me and my son 463 acres with just two of us and three sons total and 120 acres that’s only me and my son. And deer numbers are still not what I want to se at any.
Would walk over a naked woman to get to a gobblin turkey!

19 on 1000 acres?????? I have never herd of such! Your problem is obvious and no plan or advice can help at all until you drop that number to 6 members at the absolute most!
Hunting brings out the worst in people.
