I wash my clothes with baking soda and use real, fresh pine and cedar. I can hunt from the ground and have them right on top of me even looking at me, I can even move slow in correlation with the wind, and they dont freak. But make an unnatural sound, and they'll alert. Just as they get into your wind they quickly realize they are in no mans land, danger close. Usually they put it all together a little too late.


If you put cover scent products on, you may as well find your wife's loudest perfume a spray some on. It radiates a smell that is not natural. Sure it may smell like dirt, pine, or whatever, but not in a natural way. Its LOUD.

And no telling which direction the wind wants to walk that particular day

. Day, at times it is by the minute.

I start using my scent free stuff at plant time that way my scent is neutralized as good as possible by the time the season starts.

I know guys who wash with it and their laundry is scent free year round

I use to hear back in the day people would use terpintine for sent cover . I just throw pieces of lighterknot in with my hunting clothes , don't really know if it works or not

I buy cheap scent free laundry detergent at the dollar store but still buy a bottle of scent killer product every year to spray down with before going into the woods (even though i know from experience that a deer crossing my path or downwind will smell me either way). Like someone said above - the reactions are different for every deer but being on the right end of the wind is the only way to keep your scent out of a deer's nose

A dog can smell cocaine or marijuana wrapped in airtight plastic, inside a gas tank fully filled with gas and a deer's nose is 35% better (or should I say has 35% more olfactory receptors than a dog's) and you think that a little scent free wash is going to keep your scent covered if you are downwind????

Do everything that you can to be as scent free as possible but the wind and thermals are your friend, if you know how to use both properly.

I think one of the main reasons that deer are more active at night is due to superior scenting conditions cause by air inversion and higher humidity levels….This allows them to use terrain and pick up scent that is flowing across the landscape just like smoke flowing down drain after a controlled burn. People talk a lot about “how far away can a deer smell” but a lot of it is about “how far across the landscape can that smell stay held to the ground in a concentration that the deer can still detect?”

When bucks cruise looking for hot does at night they are cruising these air stream patterns…..Again, just take an aerial for mapping down drainage smoke at night and this is how bucks are “seeing” scent behave on a bigger scale.

I am strong believer of using maximum scent reduction practices.
I do everything possible from the detergent to wash hunting clothes including underwear and handkerchief to scent kill spray and rubbing
pine needles. I scrub my rubber boots with Armond Hammer baking soda.
I use Scent Lok under garments.

Every single thing matters.

I believe doing so is a major part of low impact hunting.
You can have maximum impact hunting or low minimal impact.
Maximum negative affect of each hunting intrusion - or minimal scent, sound, everything.

And it isn't just a matter of beating a deer's nose in the stand.
Certainly, hunting the right wind direction matters big time.
*But you also don't want to be leaving the maximum bad human scent trail while on the property and going in and out either.
You want to leave the absolute minimum human scent trail behind, the minimum unnatural scents (like regular detergent and regular deoderant) etc.
When you leave for the evening after dark and leave your hunting grounds you don't even want them to know you were there - - to the maximum extent posssible.

I do pack my hunting clothes in totes with fatwood in them.
