My hearing has deteriorated over the past five years to the point that with hearing aids I was only able to hear about 25% based on word and sentence recognition testing. This easily qualified me for cochlear implants. Three weeks ago I had the first surgery and this morning they activated the implant. I have heard sounds today that I haven't heard in years!!! While at the doctor's office I heard him slide a piece of paper out of a folder and that was amazing considering where I have been. The sound is robotic which is normal and should improve as my brain learns to recognize the sound the implant supplies to my auditory nerve. The plan is to acclimate to this one and then receive the second implant this fall. I am over the top thankful for technology that allows me to hear again.......

That’s awesome! Congrats. I started checking into hearing aids last week because my hearing is so bad.

Congratulations on the success. Our Grandmother cried after she went to the barroom at the Dr’s office and heard the toilet flush. She said it scared her since she hadn’t heard one in 20 years. Do those implants reduce tinnitus? The reduction in hearing plus the ringing are very distracting.

Glad to know it worked! I’m curious, does everyone’s voice also sound like a robot? And does everyone sound the same (same tone)? I’ve always wondered about that with cochlear implants.

The way it was explained to me is the brain knows there should be sound at the different levels and if you have lost some levels the brain creates a sound which is the ringing.

Glad to know it worked! I’m curious, does everyone’s voice also sound like a robot? And does everyone sound the same (same tone)? I’ve always wondered about that with cochlear implants. As of right now everyone sounds robotic or computer generated. The sound is received, processed and transmitted thru the implant into the cochlear bypassing the natural hearing functions. The audiologist said it normally takes two-three months for the brain to adjust so that folks dont sound robotic. Right now I am hearing all kind of sounds and I hear someone talking but only grab a word every now and then that I know for certain what it is. When they first activated it, everything was just a jumbled mess of sound but as the day went on I began to differentiate sounds and words began to be separated. It is a very exhausting effort for the brain to continually work to attempt to understand the impulses being sent by the auditory nerve. I experienced it before I got hearing aids and then again when my hearing failed to the point the aids were not effective. My brain was spinning constantly trying to understand the vibrations being sent but not being able to translate them to words. I had gotten to the point that I avoided any conversation I could especially with someone that didn't know about my condition.

So pleased for you!! I just got hearing aids 2 weeks ago. The removable kind. It’s amazing how the brain has to translate the sounds and pronunciations and translate everything.
I’m so glad I did, as it’s important to me for others to know I care enough about them, and listen to what they say. With my lack of hearing, and guessing at what they were saying, it wasn’t happening.
I can’t wait for hunting season as well. No telling what I was missing.
God Bless, David B.

Congrats on the implants!! Im hearing impaired also and struggle bigtime with having conversations. Any background noises makes it impossible to understand anything that is being said. And tinnitus is very bad too. Question for you please if you can ask the audiologist when you return to them.... When shooting a gun or pistol does the implant cut itself off if decibels are over a certain level, kind of like my electronic hearing protectors? Thanks!!
