there are several schools of thought on this, some say:
Hunt the bottoms the deer wantnto get out of the wind
Hunt the fields the deer like to get out of the woods because all of the motion makes it hard for them to detect motion
What say you?

I hunt edges of thickets. Thats your best chance of catching them comming or going. But windy like today I don't hunt.

2 of my biggest bucks come on windy days, I killed one in the middle of some cutover and almost got sea sick swaying back in forth in a tree stand. The other one i killed by getting right up next to a bluff where the wind is basically cut off from you. My terrian in north east Alabama is probably different than yours, I can usually find some spots out of the wind in the bottom of these deep hollers.

Get out of the wind. Most critters try to get out of the cold wind. I have seen deer run out into pastures when spooked on windy days, but they go back to cover when they calm down.

One of my best bucks came on a windy day...about 15-25 mph. It was too windy to be in the stand...my head and stomach couldn't take anymore! I stalked slowly into the wind. I jumped a nice 9 point and 3 does in an area we call the rock faces. They are open,flat rocky areas with sage and scrub oak (under 6') spread throughout. I'd move slowly and cautiosly, trying to avaoid snapping twigs. When I did snap a twig, I'd burp like a buck.
They jumped out if a scrub oak tangle that was in the sun. The does ran off. The buck ran 30 yards and looked back at me over his back. Dropped him at 75 yards. Great hunt!

I too had my best day of hunting ever, on a windy day 20-30 mile per hour wind. You guys that don't like to hunt windy days give me an invite and I will be glad to keep an eye on the woods for you on those days.  Hunt close to the bedding areas on windy days. Don't hunt food plots. That why most guys think that deer don't move on windy days.

Do you think the wind has the same effect on deer that are in or near peak rut? Monday is supposed to be pretty windy but the deer in our area are really starting to chase quite a bit. I'm sure it still will slow it down, but I'm hoping maybe not quite as much as usual...

I'm sure it still will slow it down, but I'm hoping maybe not quite as much as usual... Nope it will not hurt it. If the prerut chasing is in full swing it doesn't matter if it's windy as blue blazes they will still be chasing. They just won't be as easy to hear or see with all the noise and everything in the woods moving around. So keep your eyes peeled cause you prolly won't hear them unless they are right on top of you.
