My dad passed a few years back. He had a lot of woodworking equipment that I have slowly taken possession of. some of the wood working interest the heck out of me, especially the lathe work and turning.
I just got his lathe this week. quality piece I think, it's a Jet 1236 with a swivel head so I can turn bowls and spindles.
I need lessons. this is gonna be much more technical and detailed than I initially thought. is there anyone who would 1. come to Selma and show me the basics, or 2. let me come to you and learn?
OR is there some type of woodworking course that covers lather turning that y'all know of?

I learned watching YouTube. When I was working in Asheville NC to they gave a class at a woodworking store but the cost was ridiculous which I thought was stupid. I would have offered free classes to build my customer base.

They offer some classes also. Jet makes some quality equipment. Good luck! I myself have not tried turning.

I would have offered free classes to build my customer base. yeah, Ive spent the better part of a couple of afternoons watching you-tube...that's where I realized ...I don't think this can be "self taught"..I watched some nasty catches and have already learned I could screw this up big time, LOL

My wife bought me one for my birthday last year. I’m still learning through primarily YouTube videos. Start with small diameter turnings and go slow.

There are also lots of groups on Facebook regarding woodworking.

My advice, keep all of his old tools if at all possible. My grandad died around 10 years ago and although I kept a fair amount of his tools, some of it I let go in the estate sale a few years back. As I have gotten more into woodworking over the last couple years, there are several older hand tools that I wish I kept but at the time had no use for.
It shouldn't be terribly difficult to DIY and watch YouTube videos to get you started. You won't get good overnight but you should be able to make a square piece of wood round pretty quickly. Also, make sure you are using sharp knives and start out with softer woods...cedar, poplar, even pine.

Heck, just play with it. Imagine what you want to make then think about how you want to accomplish it. Start simple. If that don't work get a book to learn the basics or watch you tube. Biggest thing is to be safe with it. Keep your center tight. Turn unbalanced stock slow until it is balanced especially if it's heavy. Only use sharp gouges, and keep your tool rest close to your workpiece. Wear PPE.

Cut a piece of wood from whatever is close to straight and the correct size and go with it.

Look up David Gaston in Thomasville. Makes some pretty nice duck and goose calls.
