I have a 3 year old wooden deck that I should have stained or painted 3 years ago but I didn't. I'm going to pressure wash it and want to stain or paint it. I'm not sure which one is best. I don't want to have to paint it every year. Is stain better? Can anyone tell me the best route to take and how to do it? Looking for the easiest maintenance option.

Not sure if it's the best, but I pressured washed, stained, and then Thompson water sealed and it is going on 4 years and still looks great.

Be careful with the pressure washing, you can fuzz it up it you go to hard on it.
If you fuzz it up it's a biotch to straighten out.
Get you a good chemical deck cleaner and mostly use the pressure washer to rinse with.
I prefer a good oil base stain, I've had better luck with longevity with oil based products.

I'd pressure wash and use a oil based sealant and if you use color I'd use the semitransparent stain so it can be sprayed on or brushed on and it won't look like crap when the stain starts getting bad looking cause you missed doing it a year or two.the toners have to be kept up more and really need to be brushed on

We had good luck with Valspar one coat exterior stain and sealer from Lowe’s. We went with a sold base because we wanted our wood porch grey but it comes in solid, transparent, and semi transparent i think. It also has several different colors to choose from. We did back in the spring and so far it’s holding up well.

I pressure washed mine every 2 years and generously applied a penetrating stain / sealer that was guaranteed for 3 years. Being proactive like that got me 12 years out of my pressure treated deck. Anyone know a good deck builder in Shelby county?

Try the Cabot or Olympic stains. I like Olympic the best.

One caution with oil based stains; though durable,they take a long time to dry and harden. If you get rain before it drys completely; its a problem. Ask me how I know
