Do any of you know the president or one of the higher up deans at Montevallo? My daughter got accused of cheating on one of her last exams because she had the same incorrect answer on a test as her roommate. They both answered the question wrong, with the same answer. It was purely coincidental. My daughter has worked very hard all the way through her school career. She has been on full academic scholarship since graduating from HS, where she was in the top 10 and had a 4.0 GPA. As a junior in college, she has a 3.96 GPA. She doesn't have that GPA because she cheats. She has that GPA because she busts her butt studying. She has been accused of "academic dishonesty" and will have that on file, a file without any prior blemishes. I agree that her and her roommate, who are obviously both at their respective parents house, missing the same question, with the same answer looks suspicious, but do professors not take the students track record into account when filing these charges? My daughter has a track record of great grades, community service and volunteering and is a member of the Bapstist Campus Minitstry. That is not the profile of a cheater.

If anyone has personal contact with someone in charge down there, I would appreciate getting their contact info, and I'd also appreciate you giving them a heads up that I'm going to call and what it's about. If none of you do, then I guess I'm gonna go down there with my lawyer and we gonna violate some social distancing guidelines.

I am not going to let this go down like this. She's worked too hard to have that serious mark on her records. Daddy's done got pissed off.

My mothers in law is a retired professor, Maybe she can advise who to speak with.

Dang. They could have studied together and both had the same wrong info on the question.

She needs to appeal it. The school should have an academic honor council or something of the sort that will hear the case if it gets that far. Has she discussed it with the teacher? What evidence does the teacher have? A student having the same wrong answer as someone else (unless it’s like an essay question) is not justification for that accusation.

I have taught for 25 years and never heard of someone getting in trouble for having the same wrong answer. Keep us posted.

1st and this is my opinion. Your daughter needs to be the one to contact, 1st the professor, 2nd her advisor, 3rd the dean of her prospective college, 4th Dr. Stewart, the President.

I will say Dr. Stewart is one of the nicest, down to earth guys I have met. You daughter should know how to contact her proff, Advisor and dean.

I, also, agree that it should be your daughter that initiates the complaint against the teacher as to why he/she is so convinced that she and her friend cheated.

What type of test question was it: multiple choice, short answer, essay? It’s one thing if students have the same multiple choice or short answer but borderline impossible to have 2 different students have word for word the same essay answer. Your daughter may not have cheated so much as the roommate cheating off of her.

Very good questions. I assume this was an online test of some kind.

Statistics class and that's exactly what they did. They showed their work as usual. Both worked it wrong and both got the wrong answer. Work was the same, outcome was the same. The roommate didn't cheat off my daughter, nor the other way around. They're both straight A students, who sit at the front of the class and according to my daughter both ask lots of questions, and few others do. You know the kind of students that you'd profile as being cheaters.... The smart kids, who sit in front and ask all the questions..

And it was an online test. My daughter was at our house and her roommate was at her parents house when this alleged cheating took place.

I'm so mad I can't see straight. My daughter had a call the professor today at 2:00 to be informed that she (the Prof) "couldn't prove that they weren't cheating, and she had to turn it in." That's the stupidest crap for an answer I've ever heard. Young female professor who used the word "like" a lot during the call. Like, you know, like.

Why does the professor even know they are roomates?

Fur – I taught accounting for an online university for 10 years. We were required to report any thing that happened to catch our eye. The University’s notification letter was harsh to let the student know the school took it seriously. Many times the student’s explanation was sufficient. Sometimes the offense was so egregious the result was expulsion. As the prof, I wasn’t a part of the decision process. It was up to the review board.
I’d recommend she work through the process before you go postal on them. With her history, she should have a leg up with the school.

The president I had met is a bird hunter. I would have a letter stating that they were both at their own houses when taking tests and signed by parents. Sounds like a newbie prof to me.
